Golgari Question

With the addition of DGM, can Golgari now fun film on its own competitively, or is it necessary to go Jund in the current meta? My thinking here comes mostly from Putrefy giving Golgari better removal above 3 cmc and Varolz, the Scar-Striped allowing my graveyard to make stuff like Lotleth Troll into unstopable threats.

I recently rebuilt my Golgari deck because of this. Putrefy and Varolz, the Scar-Striped alone made that decision for me. I rocked a 5 player game of chaos with my new Golgari aggro deck.

Exactly what I was thinking! I say Jund still gets the edge for midrange, but I really think Golgari can function on its own for aggro. Thanks for the input

The problem is that Jund Aggro is already a deck. And you can't really get a better card right now in Standard than Searing Spear for aggro decks.

Essence Harvest can give you the late game "burn" you need to finish them off if you're focusing on scavenging, or it gains you the life you need to keep going in order to finish them off. But red is nice in that it also has some nice scavengers, like Vexing Devil s and Slumbering Dragon s.

G/B Aggro has been a thing for a while, just no one plays it because of how easy it is to play three color aggro decks (like Jund or Naya).

Here's a link to Brian Kibler's Version that's consistently made top 8 at PTQs and won Standard Dailies on MtGO.

@Sweet-Nightmare: Varolz is not an excuse to play terrible cards like Slumbering Dragon and Vexing Devil . He is, however, a decent creature.

As for playing straight GB, the problem is you lose easily splashable stuff like Searing Spear and Falkenrath Aristocrat . The only reason to play 2 colors is if you are running Predator Ooze or Geralf's Messenger .

There's nothing about 1 CMC 4/3 or 1 CMC 4 burn that says bad to me, detentionsphere. Slumbering Dragon is meh unless you play specifically to throw it away for three +1/+1 counters for 1 cmc onto your Diregraf Ghoul or whatever one drop you prefer or varolz himself. Don't hate just because it's not mainstream card choices.

Slumbering Dragon isn't a mainstream card choice because it's a really bad card in standard. You'll be dead by the time he comes online and is relevant. Compared to Stromkirk Noble or even Rakdos Cackler , he doesn't come close in the conversation about strong, red, one-drops.

I was talking interaction with scavenge. Obviously I'd rather put down something else to scavenge onto, but those one drops make scavenge worth it. If you're going to scavenge a Cackler you may as well run Slitherhead ...
