Heral of torment is the best card in born of the gods

Just about the only thing I enjoyed from BNG was the enchantment creatures. It's a very different style then what standard is used to seeing right now.

This brings me to ask what people thought about the bestow mechanic, and if it might have a chance to do well. Not asking if it will start to take over like MBD and MUD but there's something about it... And it's name is Herald of Torment

Enchant creatures are really cool and Bestow seems fun still and gives new ways to play. I dunno if I could call Herald of Torment the best card in BNG when it's still so new and whatnot. There are a number of cards in the set that I like and I think are worthy of note, Flame-Wreathed Phoenix seems like an awesome card to build around and this Tribute mechanic seems cool too. Mogis, God of Slaughter is a pretty brutal card as well. I really want to like and build/play around Kiora, the Crashing Wave I really do, but she's so fragile I just dunno how to. The only reason is because I've opened up 3 of her and I haven't even bought a box! xD

Well I certainly agree that Herald of Torment is vastly underrated, but the title for best card in the set belongs to Brimaz, King of Oreskos . Courser of Kruphix is up there as well. I don't see Herald of Torment making an appearance in MBD since half of the creatures already have flying, and Pack Rat is a pretty terrible Bestow target while Gray Merchant of Asphodel does its damage before it ever attacks.

I love the Bestow mechanic tho since there are so many benefits. You can force them to use removal on a creature that normally wouldn't be worth it (i.e. I love Bestowing a Boon Satyr onto a mana dork in my G/U Devotion deck), or trade a smaller creature with their biggest. It beats boardwipes like Supreme Verdict . It essentially gives the Bestow creature Haste. And when combined with evasion, such as in this case, it forces the opponent to come up with twice as many ways to stop that evasion.

@DukeNicky: I also agree that Flame-Wreathed Phoenix could be in the conversation, even tho the Tribute mechanic is pretty terrible overall, since it's one of the few cards where you really are getting an oversized body for its cost if the Tribute is paid. I'm not as sold on Mogis, God of Slaughter since 2 damage per turn is a pretty slow clock. And Kiora, the Crashing Wave is competing with Ral Zarek and Gideon, Champion of Justice for worst Planeswalker in the format.

I do believe he had a place in mono black aggro (if that will even stay around). And in the mix of other bestow creatures. And I do think maybe saying best in born of the gods is a bit much considering brimaz, but he's close.

Oi! @ChrisHansonBiomancin I do NOT think Ral Zarek can be in any category of "worse PW in the format" (One of may reasons why I despise Standard) Ral is amazing! I run him in my shits and giggles Izzet deck (Niv for the Win) and every time he hits the field people want him gone. Tapping/Untapping is quite good. Lightning Bolt something is awesome and oh yea I have repeatedly gotten multi (3-5) extra turns off him. Now Kiora, the Crashing Wave is new and needs to be experimented with, but I feel like she could have some potential. I want to like her. I really do, but she dies to a Shock (if you don't plus her asap), or Lightning Strike if you do. Tribute is a bit wonky overall but I think it has room to be something fun (not like Monstrous though). Brimaz is well he's a whore card LOL

@DukeNicky: Haha don't get me wrong, I think Ral Zarek is very cool and there's definitely creative ways to use the tap/untap in a powerful manner, but he's definitely near the bottom of the list. I'll go for him over Kiora, the Crashing Wave tho since he at least has some Johnny capabilities. Kiora is like a Spike card (with a Timmy ult), except she sucks. Btw, I did forget one other "worst planeswalker" nominee: Liliana of the Dark Realms .

I am tired of seeing the same planeswalkers getting reprinted every year, the core sets finally brought in new ones like Garruk, Caller of Beasts and a different chandra. Jace needs to sit the next one out unless wotc gets creative again like they did with mind sculpter.

Lol, I like that description of mind sculptor: creative. And I think that you're in luck, as I'm assuming the next block will return to kamigawa, and that could bring back tamiyo.

Another contender is Xenagos, God of Revels . I think he's way better than the other gods and possibly better than Brimaz, King of Oreskos in terms what BnG will do for standard.

I like Herald of Torment and give him a nod to the top 5 of the set, but not the best in the set.

Everyone is overlooking Ephara, God of the Polis . This is a bloody good card, and if you don't think so, then you haven't played with it. It combos with heaps of cards that are viable on their own. Precinct Captain , Heliod, God of the Sun , brimaz, Elspeth, Sun's Champion , Whip of Erebos , Prophet of Kruphix , Obzedat, Ghost Council , and the slightly more underwhelming, but still very viable, Deputy of Acquittals .
