How badass is dragonlord ojutai

I was playing some mock boards with it and I really like the way it plays out

You want to know whats even more badass? Punctuation.

In a vacuum where you're just looking at the card and how it interacts with your deck it's pretty awesome.
But... a 5/4 for 5 that doesn't impact the board when it hits is bad. It dies to Stoke the Flames and is the only Dragonlord that does. The psueod-Brainstorm that procs when it attacks drops its natural evasion. Outside of a vacuum... not so great.

Is there a limit to the number of threads one can post a day? I swear half the threads I see come from this guy.

She's also a dragon, so I would agree that she has a bad ass.

I really like it in the Jeskai Tokens SB. Its a combo-wombo with Jeskai Ascendancy + Spell, and it's a solid beater for control decks. Dragonlord Ojutai is gr8. I r8 8/8.

Yes, but having to tap it to attack also means it loses hexproof pretty quickly and if you have no means to untap it (As I said, Ascendancy), any given Stoke, Crater's Claws, Hero's Downfall or even Flatten will just make it another thing to delve away for your Treasure Cruise.

In UW it does pretty well. If you could keep your opponent from swarming the field it can hold down narset fairly well. Then the pluses start coming from narsets plus one. Suddenly your face with some more answers to your opponent the real diffention of control

Wow, my face will hold the answers! Thank you, you philosophical man-god.

The point is to stall until u get an answer. So you could keep it untapped until you draw a negate or ojutai's command to hold it down

This has to be a troll. It has to. I can't accept anything else.
"The pluses start coming from narsets plus one" I mean, really?

*you, I have no idea what u means. Also you need a period at the end of your last sentence.
March 30, 2015 5:30 p.m.
Hmm. You might want to find someone to play against. The game is drastically different when you actually have an opponent and aren't just goldfishing hands.

IndepenentMeta, how many threads do you post each day? Yes, she's good. Like every other Elder dragon in this set. End of story.
ShamaLamaDingDong Applause.

Okay, then... why the buck would you want to play Ojutai in a control shell, when you can have Silumgar, the Drifting Death which is essentially unremovable, no matter whether tapped or not? Also, Ojutai can't attack into Hornet Queen tokens nor block Siege Rhino.
UW Control is not viable anyways, respectively, playing control without black when you can have Hero's Downfall and Ultimate Price and what not would be weird. Fetch Lands as well as Temples in two Colours make three colours as easy as it gets. But, oh, well...
March 30, 2015 5:34 p.m.
Dragonlord Ojutai doesn't work anywhere outside of Standard and maybe EDH, and even in those formats it's very underwhelming. It requires too much setup and protection to be good. Cards have to be good on their own too - especially creatures.
March 30, 2015 5:36 p.m.
I really can't tell if this guy is trolling or not..... Suddenly talking about fetchlands speculations, and suddenly saying an Elder Dragon is bad ass.....
Actually, I think that people should only be able to make one thread a day. Then we don't get flooded with junk threads...

Ojutai is trash in commander, there are way better draw engines, and if you're going WU then just run Geist or Grand Arbiter

Stormbreath Dragon is still in standard. If you're going to run Ojutai it'd be advisable to have a plan for him, he's kinda a prick to white stuff.
The four toughness is pretty rough though. Sure it has conditional hexproof, but it can't block any of the other dragons that'll see play in standard. And his ability is when he hits a player, which would be fun with Temur Battle Rage.
March 30, 2015 6:15 p.m.
quesobueno123 says... #30
IndepenentMeta and stormbreath has pro-white, has the same toughness, and with four power it can block Ojutai all day, it is the better card.

omnipotato says... #32
Ojutai has doubled in price in the last couple of days and I think it's because people are realizing how good it is in control shells. It protects itself the turn it comes down, and it lets you draw into more relevant spells as it attacks, to protect it further or deal with threats.
It's not good against black decks chock full of removal since you don't want to keep wasting counterspells to protect it, but against a creature or burn based deck it's great. As a control player, if your opponent is playing burn and is casting Stoke the Flames on turn 6 or 7 on your creature instead of you, you've already won the game.
Chewawahjoe I agree that Silumgar is better. Most games I win with my control deck is with him. However, you can't have 4 Silumgar in your deck, and you want more rather than fewer dragons in order to have Silumgar's Scorn be powerful in the lategame as well as be Force Spike early on.
For an Esper deck in the current metagame, I think the best wincon suite would be 2 Silumgar, the Drifting Death, 2 Dragonlord Ojutai and 1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

My god people... Grow the fuck up. I'm sick of watching the "cool kids clique" surf around this site and harass IndepenentMeta.
I mean why do you guys go ape shit flinging poop because he can't communicate through writing, can't put a complete thought together, and creates a lot of threads? There are countless threads similar to this made all the time that get no responses and are forgotten to time. He didn't piss in your Cheerios, just made a thread, move on with your lives.

Contrary to what most are saying here out of ignorance Dragonlord Ojutai is a swell card in Standard. I was surprised at how well it played this past weekend. Most of the time when playing against Ojutai it just sat there not attacking but influencing the board in a noticeable way until the control player had a sizable advantage. It was easy for them to protect and difficult to remove, seems like a good finisher for control as we move forward.

Most are saying it's bad just to contradict IndepenentMeta I think.
March 30, 2015 6:54 p.m.
Well, I actually don't think it's that great if that counts for anything. It requires you to have too much after it hits the field and dies too easily.

I have to concur with Rasta_Viking29. Ojutai isn't the best of the dragons, but in a control shell it is definitely an option for a decent finisher. However, I also agree that because of the conditional hexproof that Ojutai is also fairly mediocre. Really, I don't think it would have been too much to ask to give him permanent hexproof and raise the CMC to 6. Alas, we are left with what we have.
March 30, 2015 7:07 p.m.
omnipotato says... #38
Permanent hexproof plus that ability would mean game over 90% of the time once it hits the table.
It's a decent card, around the same level as Prognostic Sphinx in a vacuum, but with Silumgar's Scorn and Crux of Fate it's a lot better.

Lol yah man by now I just skim though the trash talking and read the useful stuff. I kinda got used to the fact that these people will forever be talking shit about everything I say, so I suggest some of you that wanna do the same highlight my name, if you feel you have something important to say

Could you cast Silumgar's Scorn with our showing a dragon? Cause that text has me a bit confused.

Yep, that's why it's so great, it's a Force Spike early game and Counterspell late game in the right deck.

I have done a decent amount of testing with the dragonlord in my u/w control deck (for the purpose of explaining my credibility/competency as a player, I feel that it is important for me to say that I have gotten 1st place twice at fnm with my u/w control list). Anyway, I do not like the dragon lord mainboard at all. part of the advantage of playing u/w control is that your opponent has so much dead removal. Playing this guy (game 1 at least) just takes away that advantage. Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Pearl Lake Ancient are just better game 1. I could see him as a game 2 and 3 card, though. when your opponent sides out their removal, he becomes a lot better.
all that being said, I do not like him enough to play him myself. if I play creatures in the side (which I do), they are going to be Soulfire Grand Master and Brimaz, King of Oreskos. other than that, I might play a Resolute Archangel in the side as well, depending on the expected meta

I should also say that omnipotato's statement about intentionally disagreeing with IndepenentMeta is rather asinine. just because people may not like him/get along with him doesn't mean they will give an opinion that they don't really believe just to piss him off (I doubt it would piss him off anyway. the point of the thread, I think, is to discuss the card. so differing opinions are great)

I played against her in Esper Control where she was very good. I also saw her against U/W Control where she was meh because it had less dragons and was easier to stick Stormbreath Dragon as a trump.
Silumgar's Scorn was great with in conjunction with Qjutai. With 4 dragons, 3 Anticipates, and 4 Digs it is usually a hard counter. It makes your Dig into counterspell all the more deadly as well.
