How does Lifelink work on master of cruelties?

I've searched for about an hour for an answer as to how lifelink would apply to Master of Cruelties hitting a player/creature, how much life, if any would you gain if say he got through, would you gain 19 if your opponent was at 20? or would you gain 1 because that's his power?
but that still counts as an opponent losing life because of a creature, the same reason the Master of Cruelties Rix Maadi Guildmage combo works?

First, rules questions should be asked in the Q&A, which you can find in the header bar.
Second, lifelink applies only to damage dealt by the source. Master of Cruelties 's ability doesn't deal any damage, so no damage-related abilities will affect it. Master of Cruelties 's ability also causes Master of Cruelties to assign no combat damage, so you won't even gain any life during combat damage.

In response to post #2:
Life loss and damage are not the same thing. Damage causes loss of life, but loss of life is not damage.
Rix Maadi Guildmage 's second ability works on opponents who have lost life for any reason, including damage, spells, and abilities.

The only way to gain life with a lifelinked Master of Cruelties is to block or be blocked.

You wouldn't gain any life, if the Master goes unblocked, he assigns no damage, your opponents life total simply becomes 1.
