How does one count split cards in their mana counts?

So, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to count cards like Driven / Despair in my mana counts. Should I only count the top part's CMC, or should I include all symbols?

The rules changed for these cards recently. The converted mana cost for Reduce / Rubble for example is 6. However, when on the stack, each half is only 3. Brain in a Jar would need 6 counters on it to cast Reduce / Rubble and would only be able to cast reduce, as the other part would need to be in the graveyard.

To clarify, if you can cast a spell cmc 3 or less for free, you can't cast Reduce / Rubble as it is 6. If Reduce / Rubble has been cast and is on the stack, Thoughtbind will counter either half, but Disdainful Stroke won't since the cmc is only 3 while on the stack. It is troublesome that as it goes from any zone to the stack you count both halves but on the stack you only count the half being cast.

If I understand you correctly:

The official CMC is the combination of the all of the symbols. However, since I am only able to cast one of the spells at a time, I should only count CMC of the individual spells.

The reason I ask is, I'm trying to figure out my actual CMC to determine the amount of mana I need. You think I should just count the first spell's CMC, since that's the one that will technically be cast from my hand?

Am I making sense, lol?

You are making sense. Yes, you only need mana for whichever half you are casting. Because of cards like Brain in a Jar people would cast the bust half of Boom/Bust when a Brain in a Jar only had 2 counters on it. Wizards corrected the rule with aftermath cards. I just wanted to make sure you werent trying to get a much cheaper spell than the rules permit now. As far as the mana, you would figure out how you plan to use the card, for your example I personally would want to cast both halves the same turn so I would count it as a 4 drop. But if you plan to cast 1 half at a time count it as a 2 drop

Basically, if it's in your hand, graveyard, or library, add all of the symbol values together. The total is the CARDS cmc. This is also true for type. If one half is instant speed, and one is sorcery speed, it counts as BOTH until it is actually CAST. Once it is cast, it is only the type and cmc on the cast spells respective half.

Gearhulk LOVE double cards! Torrential gearhulk can actually flash back the memory portion of commit/memory!

Combustible gearhulk LOVES the look on opponents faces when they flip a commit // memory or two. :)

If I were figuring out land type needs for a 60 card deck, I'd count up each and every one of the color symbols in he casting costs for each color. Then, cut the number in half. There's the number of sources that you should think of having for your deck.

Example: you've got 12 black mana symbols in your spell casting costs. You've got a multicolored creature card that uses two black and one green in it's casting cost.

TOtal number of black Mana symbols is 14 (12+2), so run yourself 7 swamps. In this example one forest, because you can't have only a half forest.
