How Good is Temur Sabertooth Really?

Standard forum

From all the games of Standard I've seen him played in, I have enjoyed each game, and appreciated just how good he was in those games. As an outlet, he can Repeal your creature to save it, turn a manifested noncreature into card draw, win trades, threaten an infinite combo (sometimes), turn on Ferocious, and allow you to re-trigger ETB effects in general.

The G/x Manifest decks are starting to make some headway in the meta game, and this card is great utility for them. But it seems so mediocre. It reminds me a bit of a worse Cartel Aristocrat in terms of power in simplicity (Cartel Aristocrat was not seen as many to be the role-player it ended up being). I wanted to know what your guys thoughts on the deck was? I really have loved seeing it played, and am thoroughly considering running it myself.

If you do think it's great, name a card you think would be good with it please :D! Try not to post cards that have already been mentioned for that aspect though :D

Siege Rhino bouncing? Hes good in the Temur Ascendancy combo.

I think it is cool in the combo deck, and I hope the combo deck becomes more popular because it is a pretty easy match up for me (I play u/w control)

Think the card is awesome. Really good with Reclamation Sage and manifested cards.

Mono black devotion list splash green for the sabertooth and keep replaying Gray Merchant of Asphodel ?

Double green is hard for a splash but it is possible.

Well.... I don't really like the card. It's just a 4/3, with indestructible sometimes. It can save your creatures, yes, but I don't you really want to sometimes.

People slams Rhino, Pulakronos, Ashcloud Phoenix, Butcher and so on onto the battlefield. This creature just doesn't have the same impact as those creature sadly.

And I guess that's just your playstyle is all. I've yet to grab one but when he was first spoiled he was the only card that made Mannifest to me look super special awesome.... well I mean, that and Cloudform.

At the end of the day probably one of the best uncommons from FRF but outside of that is questionable.

Its effectiveness is largely based on the matchup (underwhelming vs aggro), and it only fits well into creature-heavy decks with ramp (its a 6 drop) or the combo deck. But against control/removal-heavy midrange, it's a stud.

@ChrisHansonBiomancin It's a 4 drop bro. 2GG with a 1G activated ability.

February 6, 2015 10:24 p.m.

It's a 6-drop in the same way that Reaper of the Wilds is.

@ChrisHansonBiomancin that doesnt make any sense they are both 4 drops with activated abilities that cost mana, you dont take on the ability cost to the mana cost?

The ability takes 2 mana and you should be able to use the ability the turn you play it so you basically need 6 mana

It has certain gimmicky uses. In fact, I've built a deck around him: Bounce is the Name of the Game

@bretters Or play it with 4 mana and use it's abilities next turn.....

Agreed, it's a 4 drop.

Could be a nice addition to a Constellation deck; replay a Gnarled Scarhide, or something similar, every turn.

I think it's great card for ETB the battle creatures. The Hornet Queen was already mentioned. There's a bunch of other creature in M15 with ETB effects that would pair up well with it. I don't know whether the standard format would include Theros too, I know there are more creatures in that set that would work well with the sabertooth. I'm planning on using it for a EDH pauper deck.

Yes theros block is still legal in standard

Sweet. You'd be able to bounce the Satyr Grovedancer repeatably and pile on the +1/+1 counters. That would synergise well with some of those outlast creatures that give bonuses to creatures with +1/+1 counters too.

phc Except that's only possible in standard. The time you want to do something like that is in limited.

I'm going to end up using him in PDH, so it is bit of a moot point for me. Lovely thing about pauper EDH, little to no ETB hate.
