How will the rotation of Dragons and Origins Impact standard
Standard forum

So pretty much everyone and their mother has talked about how they are so happy so and such card is going out or how mad that the engine to their favorite deck is going out,
but I feel like people are underestimating how deeply this will impact standard because personally I think Dragons and Origins are the best sets in Standard right now they are very diversified and powerful in their card selection and make alot of things possible.

No more Jace, Vryn's Prodigy Flip. Thank the gods. Maybe now it'll drop low enough to where I can get one for my Sedris, the Traitor King EDH deck without having to sell a kidney just to get one. Also U/R Thopters can kiss it.

Ill start of by saying thar dark petition and languish will severley decimate the power of the black control decks, and the removal of Orbs of Warding will make Burn decks a tier 1 competitor, Also goggles will die along with the Den Protector Crush of Tentacles Combo

I can't imagine a world without Collected Company I played the heck out of that card ever since it was printed in DTK. It was especially potent in my simic walkers deck...
Good thing Modern gets to keep one of the best cards ever printed! Honestly, I believe Grindy style decks will grow. Stuff like Bx Control, Gx stompy, etc. etc. With the powerhouse of Collected Company cycling, I do believe that will open up some doors for great new strategies that will be equally fun to play.

I have a feeling colorless matters may be a thing again. I guess it depends on how they choose to do artifact support/synergy but I could cards like Herald of Kozilek being decent as I feel Izzet will be a thing.

Company has shaped the meta alot most deck capabilities are measured by their ability to deal with Company decks

I wont be sad to see CoCo go, hoping for some better/playable counter spells, and some great new red spells for my izzet deck.

Losing Languish will suck; but who knows, maybe it won't go; never know what will happen in the next set
August 30, 2016 7:56 p.m.
@AgentGreen I doubt it, but maybe we'll get Damnation instead!

Collected Company...I will be so damn glad to see that rotate. I will miss Languish to be sure, but CoCo can suck it.
Now with that rant out of the way, I honestly think that we will see an uptake in artifact decks, IF Kaladesh makes them matter more. If not, then we just might see something like...I dunno...a nearly-creatureless Planeswalker deck do well, or, maybe mono-white Humans will dominate the field, or U/W spirits...I expect to see those for the first week or two myself, as they are proven decks, while people try out new strategies.
August 30, 2016 8:19 p.m.
Atony1400 Wotc is trolling you, they never plan on reprinting Damnation despite it not really being off-color.
August 30, 2016 8:19 p.m.
Unless they get some new support I don't think mono white humans will take the throne what with, Dragon Hunter, Kytheon, Anointer of Champions, Knight of the White Orchid, and Consul's Lieutenant going out of Rotation

Bant Company dies 99 percent of the time when up against UR Spells so it really isn't much of a threat as it used to be.
This "Okay, everyone throw their decks in the bin" annual rotation has made players quit Standard for Modern in droves...Eternal formats FTW

As long as I have some decent counterspells, I'm happy. I only play Standard at FNMs or casually and my deck is literally only losing some counterspells. Nearly every card in it is from SOI block.
As for what will change? Too early to tell, IMO.

I am about to lose one of my favorite Standard decks of all time, G/B Seasons Past Control, due to the loss of Languish, Dark Petition, Nissa, Vastwood Seer Flip, Duress, and Ultimate Price. I am totally okay with losing Collected Company, however I am scared that Kaladesh is not going to be able to fill the Void that Origins and DTK blessed us with.

Duress is probably going to stick around in the PW starter decks.
I'm hoping Languish makes the cut in that starter deck; or make an appearance in Kaladesh; it is very powerful but not game breaking. There are very few sweepers, but I think if Languish doesn't survive players will shift to cards like Planer Outburst for their sweeper
August 31, 2016 12:56 p.m.
Well, my Zombie tokens deck will be fine (it's primarily based in SoI, but it is losing Risen Executioner). In fact, better than fine, as I have one less sweeper to worry about- Languish. Everyone and their mother was running the damn thing at my LGS.
I also no longer need to worry about Sideboards, because Virulent Plague will no longer exist.
HOWEVER, I will miss the 1 mana discard cards (the only hand hate we have left in standard after rotation is Collective Brutality and Whispers of Emrakul.
I hear ramp is going to suffer, since the only ramp cards left will be Natural Connection and Nissa's Renewal.
So let's recap- black control has barely anything, green ramp has barely anything, red has slightly more burn spells than it did have, blue has no counter spells worth mentioning.
We need a major miracle for most of the colours in standard atm.
September 7, 2016 9:06 a.m.
The only thing ramp is losing is nissas pilgrimage explosive vegetation was long abandoned in favor of hedron archive, we also still have transgress the mind in hand hate as well as pick the brain and if you want to include it we also have distended mindbender
And black control isnt left with nothing there still numerous good black control cards like grasp of darkness, murder, succumb to temptation, the previously mentioned hand hate and theres also a few good cards in kaladesh that are def going into the black control shell
And blue has negate which is great, horrible awry, dispel, spell shrivel, and the new summary dismissal which trumps even the annoying eldrazi cast triggers not to mention the new card from kaladesh Ceremonius rejection which counters any colorless spell for 1 mana

Ceremonius rejection is a very solid counter.
Have that Emrakul you want to put down, NOPE; I counter it with my single counterspell

And here's the added bonus
IF Devoid decks make a comeback; then you have a counterspell for every single spell in their hand

ComradeJim270 says... #25
The downside being that the card is garbage in the mainboard.
September 7, 2016 10:01 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #27
I guess. I'm just getting increasingly frustrated that we haven't seen even one mainboard-worthy counterspell yet.
Atony1400 says... #2
Many decks are going to lose key cards, and now it comes down to if Kaladesh can fill holes that are left by the rotating sets.
