Long story short; the experiment with 2 rotations a year is over and now the rotation will occur on a yearly bases as before

I'm kinda pissed because I just sold off a bunch of standard staples from bfz because I didn't think I'd need them, now I'm sort of fucked.

Chubbub Why did you do that when BFZ was still good till April 2017?

Buy low sell high?

This is an interesting move by Wizards. We have barely gotten to see how the new rotation format is affecting players, but maybe there was already enough negative backlash?

I understand that one of Wizard's biggest priorities has been to drive down the cost of standard, which has been helped somewhat by the addition of the Masterpiece series, and I wonder if that is their only reasoning for deciding to do this. Overall I like the idea because the old standard rotation worked fine, but part of that comes with each new set needing to add something new to the Standard format; while Wizards for the most part has been good with this, we all remember ProTour BFZ, which had a surprising lack of cards from the set.

I'm cautiously excited.

The Professor at TCC has been adamant about the new rotation being terrible, and I have to agree. Several friends of mine and I had a small kitchen table group, and the faster rotation forced all of us to dump standard more or less at the same time. If you're not playing standard every week, the faster rotation means it's just not worth your time of day.

I really hope they're serious about leaving the format alone this time. I'm getting tired of changing the paradigm on the format all the time.

October 19, 2016 5:41 p.m.

Man am I glad to hear this. Standard was becoming wayyyyy to expensive to play.

The announcement kinda caught me off guard, but honestly it does mean the cards you invest in today from Kaladesh will have a longer shelf-life than it did yesterday. That is good news to cash-strapped players like me. The best part is it is not retroactive, so that means that Collected Company is not coming back...which makes me very happy. I hate that card with a passion, even if I own one copy for EDH purposes.

October 19, 2016 8:33 p.m.

Well that was incredibly short lived. And all for the best. The twice a year rotation was incredibly detrimental.

Does that mean the blocks like Origins are going to return? I miss those blocks because they didn't have to focus on one plane and instead focused on a lot of planes.

October 19, 2016 9:50 p.m.

No, origins will not return. They are starting it now with BFZ. I'd rather have a rotation with every new block (2x's a year) though to keep it fresh with the sets standard-legal for 2 years. Once a year rotation means that they'll suffer from format stagnation like they did before.

AgentGreen well it was a play set of kozilek's return and I figured they'd start going down in about three months, also I could just play other decks but now it'll be valuable for much longer and could become even stronger.

Not what i meant i meant the blocks like Origins, M10-M15 etc if things like that might return.

I love this. I didn't want to play standard anyways when all the decks were company anyways, and not that its gone, they've fixed standard back!

jellowsmurf says... #25

They should've left it, Standard rotating more often is a good thing, as it keeps things interesting. It's going to go back to everyone playing the same 5 decks for 8+ months. The only thing I'm going to remain optimistic about is that since there's more variation all at once, it'll keep things interesting. But I remain doubtful. This shit's gonna suck.

OneItsStarted that doesn't make sense. Someone's always going to find a super combo. Just now, depending on when they find it, it'll be around for much longer lol.

October 21, 2016 6:31 a.m.

Bovine073 says... #26

jellowsmurf correct me if I am wrong, but Standard rotates still the same amount of times, but there are more sets legal in each season?

October 21, 2016 7:33 a.m.

OneItsStarted says... #27

Combo? Company wasn't a combo, it was just a bant aggro deck with company thrown in. Combo decks are ones like the eldrazi/aether works masterpiece deck in the pro tour top eight that can easily be stopped by a couple counterspells. If you have doubts about the new old rotation, then just think back to khan, theros, innistrad standards, they weren't that long ago and they were fine with long rotation schedules.

October 21, 2016 7:35 a.m.

jellowsmurf says... #28

A combination of cards that dominate standard, don't nitpick bro, you know what I was saying. There's always a couple cards that ppl stick to.

Khans and Theros sucked for standard. Esp Khans lol. I remember everyone showing up with Abzan something or other ft Siege Rhino for God knows how long. It would've been even longer if they didn't implement the new rotation. The new system would've been better, but a lot of ppl are averse to change, and hop on the bandwagon when pros start bitching about it.

Bovine073 standard will rotate the same as it used to, there will just be 3 sets at once. I feel like it could be alright with that kind of variance, but idk.

Doesn't matter too much what anyone thinks, this is how the game is. I'll still enjoy playing no matter how I feel about rotation.

notsoclutch says... #29

jellowsmurf the two rotations a year had positives, but for the majority of players it was a hinderance due to how quickly decks became irrelevant. If this was something like Hearthstone where you can get cards for free, thatd be one thing, but having to constantly update and scrap decks is a heavy burden on the wallet.

October 22, 2016 5:40 p.m.

I liked the faster rotations. I don't play standard, I play edh. And more cards more often was good enough for me.

Raging_Squiggle...what? The set release isnt being messed with. The only change is how often standard is rotated.

October 22, 2016 6:34 p.m.

Oh, I must've misunderstood the article. Lol. My bad.

I don't like how when set "Ham" comes out we lose innistrad as well as zendikar.

I feel that with the new schedule of releasing two blocks a year would make rotating twice a year playable.

If we look at "Current Standard" we have 4 block sets. When "Ham" releases we lose two blocks and gain one set, we go from 8 sets in standard to 5. I feel that instead it would give cards longer shelf life if When "Ham" comes out the zendikar block rotates out (fall rotation) And then we would have 7 sets in standard and only lose 1 set worth of cards. "eggs" is released and we go back to 8 sets in standard. And then when the first set from the block after "eggs" comes out innistrad will be rotated out (spring rotation) and we'll have 7 sets again. It allows all cards to stay around for 2 years and then we rotate one plane for another with the arrival of a new block and we don't have such a drastic loss of cards going from 8 sets to 5 sets.

HairyManBack says... #34

I agree a lot with Gabe_The_Controller. Going from 8 to 5 sets is a really big effect. Probably a bit over the top from what I'm looking at now.

However, I can see the benefits. Like 'resetting' and 'getting a fresh start'. Still when there's 5 sets and one deck pops up and dominates (like it so often does) it makes Standard even more boring. If there were always at least 7 sets it would smooth out the playing field. Or maybe not. Mixed bag.

In any event I like it going back to the original rotation with as much as 8 sets. Keeps a happy balance.

October 23, 2016 12:52 a.m. Edited.

I play EDH and Legacy. Neither format is affected by this. So lol k.

Named_Tawyny says... #36

I'm cautiously optimistic, although I would have rather seen them keep a twice a year rotation, but include four blocks instead of three - as it stands right now, the second Amonhket set is going to still only be in standard for 15 months.

I am a bit worried about Amonkhet standard though - I don't think the FFL was playtesting standard with four blocks, which means there might be some very unbalanced cards combinations.

October 23, 2016 5:44 p.m.

HairyManBack says... #37

Named_Tawyny - I agree. Because Wizars said, "effective immediately'' in the article link above that raises a bunch of concerns in my outlook. However, would you think that they may even change upcoming cards because of this? If so, this might be a very varied format. If not it might be exactly as you suspect... unbalanced. :(

Everyone here should note that this decision made by WotC is most likely a decision based off of money. As is every decision (other than bannings).

Here's a video done by someone who is more knowledgeable about the potential reasons in regards to monetary benefit from a company stand-point.

well i think money is certainly correlated but they do have the integrity of their game to uphold. I think its likely that the new release schedule was probably a pretty hectic amount of work internally and hard to keep up.
