I Want To Break Medomai, the Ageless

Medomai the Ageless : To me, this card is just screaming to be broken. Does anyone have any card suggestions that would really make this card over powered? I'm hoping, and think, the next set will help a little better.

I've wanted to break him too, extra turns seems so tantalizing, but you would need to flicker him or clone him in some way, and there are not many (or possibly any?) good ways to do that currently. The only one I can think of is Skybind , and it's a bit chunky/janky. Alternatively you could probably use Gift of Immortality and some sort of sacrifice engine to pseudo flicker him.

You cannot break him. The text where he cannot attack on extra turns is the issue. Even if you bounce him, you are still in an extra turn and therefore cannot attack. The best you could do is Thassa, God of the Sea or Aqueous Form to swing as an unblockable and take 2 turns for each 1 or your opponent's

Well there are cards that can send him back to hand. The name is escaping me but you enchant a creature and tap it to return target creature to owners hand. As far as cloning goes, they just made your answer in a very broken card as well. Clever Impersonator . I was thinking of a card that makes target creature deal dame to target player. Like a fighting mechanic except you can deal to player or something along the lines of Viridian Longbow (this will be completely broken for modern) except in standard.

Viridian Longbow or other ping effects don't work since Medomai has to deal combat damage to trigger.

Well, it's got be combat damage, so that unfortunately would not work. :(

@Invisible_Stalker I think you are thinking of Retraction Helix

weisemanjohn -- You're 100% correct, I for some reason assumed that bouncing him would make him 'forget' that it was an extra turn. The gatherer ruling clearly says otherwise, good catch.

He's legendary. Cloning is a no-go.

Better off playing him in a deck that can give him haste (Hammer of Purphoros in a Jeskai deck, maybe) so opponents have to have an instant and mana up to deal with him. On a side note; Rabblemaster with extra turns could get out of hand even easier than he already does.

JDX: him being legendary doesn't make cloning pointless. You can clone a legendary and still have the new one. Cloning him is pointless because he can't attack on extra turns in general and not just extra turns caused by the first one.

Double Strike allows for 2x Extra turns when you attack with it... and (though not in Standard anymore) you can still attack on "Extra combat phases", so something like Aurelia, the Warleader + giving him Double Strike could net you 4x extra turns...

...of course, you could have just used beefy creatures and used the extra attack and Double Strike to have won the game by then.

Nobody seems to realize he can double strike for 2 additional turns as that is 2 occurances of combat damage separated by phases and in modern or legacy you could use a card giving an additional attack phase warranting 4 additional turns with double strike. Then so what if he can't attack on those turns.

@Rayenous I was still typing when you posted , great minds think alike.

Rayenous, ColdHeartedSith: Double strike really gives 2 extra turns?! Thank you guys so much! These type of mechanics are exactly what I'm looking for. That and Thassa making him unblockable. So thank you, weisemanjohn.

Does anyone know of any standard legal cards that give double strike?

Thanks, Caligula! Next question, is it worth the mana cost?

Invisible_Stalker If you play Jeskai. You have access to Hero of Iroas to lower the casting cost of Battle Mastery , and Generator Servant to "ramp" into Medomai the Ageless . I've only given it a few seconds of thought, so there are probably better strategies, but this is the starting point I would go from if I were intent on playing this strategy.

Rob_the_Taavi has it right, I think he'd be best suited for a standard Jeskai build.A Bant build might be quite possible and provide some ramp to speed things up

This is what I have so far guys! I'm really excited about the deck. If you all could look at it and tell me what you think, I would appreciate it.

Caligula I didn't even consider Bant! I think I may be obsessed with Generator Servant right now. haha
