I'm confused on how to determine...
Standard forum

How do I determine the legality of cards? I have a mono red deck that I put onto the website and it says that like half of the cards are illegal for a standard deck. If they are that's okay, but where can I find this list? On the MTG website all I can find is "There's no banned cards in Standard tournaments." So if you can, please help!
It works with expansion sets. Standard legality right now starts from theros up to dragons of tarkir. You can determine the set of a card by its symbol in the middle right of the card. What you can do to help yourself in your standard deckbuilding is go on a mtg card search engine and select ''standard'' in an advanced search. My favorite site for this is magiccards.info but there are others.
Hope that clears it for you!

Standard is a format that only allows the last two or so year's worth of cards. Any card older than the sets that are allowed in (or those that have not received a reprint in a standrad legal set), are "banned" in the format. The list that you are looking at is a list that tells you when one particular card is too powerful for the format and they need to get rid of it. Look into Jace, the Mind Sculptor, as he was banned in standard when he came out.

So when Origins comes out July 17 does that mean that Theros is out?

Origins is a "core set", so that means it won't trigger a format rotation. The Standard format will rotate when the Battle for Zendikar expansion set is released. At that time the entire Theros expansion block (Theros, Born of the Gods, Journey into Nyx) and the Magic: 2015 core set will no longer be legal in Standard.

Also, many side sets reprint older cards or have cards that aren't in the current expansion blocks or core set and so they aren't standard legal. Duel decks, for example, may have cards from current standard blocks along with old card reprints and so even though they're recently released they're not part of the standard block. Standard is pretty limited compared to any other format, and will get even more limited as they rotate out blocks sooner starting next year. You can go to mythicspoilers.com and click expansions to see all the different expansion symbols, and click a symbol to see images of all the cards from that set. Good to browse for getting ideas

The Standard-legal cards are all the cards that are in the following sets: Theros, Born of the Gods, Journey into Nyx, M15, Khans of Tarkir, Fate Reforged, and Dragons of Tarkir. That list will change in a couple months though.
