Is golgari Dead? Or will born of the gods save it?

Ive been looking fro "dredge/golgari" type of deck to play in standard. Ive always likes the idea from playing out of grave yard. But it seems that golgari is dead and not even worth trying? Will its get better with born of the gods ? If so would it be smart to invest some key cards for it??

You can play whatever deck you like to play as long as you're creative and good at the game you will get some wins. However I would agree that reanimator type cards are scarce at the moment. Whip of Erebos is bad and so is Rescue from the Underworld . Golgari isn't dead but reanimator is.

Anyway green has some flexible creatures and black has some nice removal so no, you should be fine. It's just not popular at the moment.

I would not say Golgari is dead as there have been recent Golgari decks that have made it to the top 8 in tournaments and even one deck won as seen here it may not be up their with devotion decks but it is not truly dead like simic. :P

But if your trying to do reainamator that deck type is kinda of dead in standard as of now. D:

Sorry for my confusion i thought golgari was reainamator. I'm lil bit of noobie when it comes to magic. Just seems like cool way to play. But its sucks that there is nothing out there to help it out. I hope born of the gods change that.

There is literally 0% chance of knowing if born of the gods will make this, or any other archetype better or worse.

So long as wel don't know what all of the cards and interactions are, we cannot know if something is worth spec'ing on, because we cannot know how it will be impacted.

Also, no archetype is really "dead" in this format, if you're going on an FNM-FNM basis. At my LGS, i've seen Izzet, Simic, Dimir, Golgari, and RUG decks do moderately well in the last couple of months. As for top tier pro decks, you have no way of influencing them unless you are also a top tier pro, and even then it's a long shot to get everyone to like something on your own.

So basically, play whatever you want to play, and then hope for the best in BoTG. If you know how to make a deck, you should do just fine.

I'm sorry ChiefBell but Whip of Erebos is not bad. It's seeing play in top tier MBD decks.

Its seeing play as a 1 of in about 90% of those builds because whipping back a merchant sounded like fun. I wouldn't say that it's particularly bad either, but it certainly isn't good right now, and definitely not something to build a strategy around until it has more support that isn't torn apart as quickly as other decks are able to do.

Just checked ten MonoBDevotion decks on mtgtop8 and it didn't appear one time. In a larger search of 30 decks 2 copies were run in a single deck. It's seeing the most tiny amounts of play possible.

It's obviously trash. Paying 4 to reanimate a creature for a single turn pales in comparison to what other cards used to be able to do. It's too much mana, and too easy to remove in the current meta. It also doesn't have a massive impact on the boardstate as soon as it's played. Once you've seen things like Reanimate or Goryo's Vengeance you see the whip and just yawn.

This was a sample of decks from four different opens.

In the best current MBD decks, like Turtenwald's, Whip of Erebos is being left out in favour of more consistency. I think the closest thing available to a reanimator deck currently is the one that Conley Woods piloted at... I forget, but it was a Grand Prix from late last year. Had like Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord , Shadowborn Demon , and some other stuff. Didn't do very well. o_O

I disagree w reanimator being dead. Just needs to be reshaped. Ive gone 4-0, 3-1, 3-1, 4-0 at fnm w reanimator.

Its runs as a midrange deck w reanimator theme. i dont know how to post decklists but its on my page now. Return to reanimator.

Surprisingly. Consistant and strong in most matchups

If reanimator ever became a big thing again people would just start running Rest in Peace and more Scavenging Ooze etc. It's really not a strong archetype right now. It can probably take a few people by surprise but if it ever did get big then people would start packing cards to shut it down hard; and those cards happen to all be easily available.

Erebos's Army is my deck. It works pretty well and is fun to play. potential Giant Adephage on turn 5 with haste

Well, the Golgari don't bury their dead, they plant them. Even if BotG doesn't save golgari, the following set might revive it, as that set will introduce enemy-colored gods and the golgari scryland.
