Since it's still somewhat unclear if Birds of Paradise will be reprinted this cycle, could card:Avacyn's Pilgrim + Prophetic Prism be a viable replacement in the mean time?
Arbor Elf + the appropriate 'Forest' Shock Land(s) will usually better/quicker.
Prophetic Prism does let you draw a card, replacing itself in your hand, but Abundant Growth on a Forest would do the same thing.
And Verdant Haven could also be used if you aren't needing the mana on the first few turns. Gives life, and additional mana (ramp), that Abundant Growth does not.

But that's just it, Birds of Paradise has always been a staple because it is playable on turn 1 and gives you all the colors. ALL THE COLORS. The most Arbor Elf can get you on turn 2 (from his ability) is 3 colors. There's always the ability to play a shockland that is double off-color from your green-producing one, but even then, you only get 4 colors and you paid 4 life.
In short, BIRDS OP

No, because Birds of Paradise takes 4 slots and those would take 8.
I still like Chromatic Lantern for all my fixing needs.
