Last Night @ FNM

So last night I was playing my Naya Midrange deck and sailed through the first two rounds. I beat down a mono green deck round 1 which took the second game only from the lucky turn 4 Deadbridge Goliath which kept my turn 4 Thragtusk at bay. Wolfir Silverheart bonded with the goliath and it was over. But, the other games were vastly in my favor.Round 2 was against a Boros aggro that appeared to be a budget build. Turn 1 Legion Loyalist actually made the early game a bit dicey for me putting the pressure on and making me trade a mana dork and slowed my ramping, but I pulled the match off.Round three...second week in a row that Esper Control has stopped me with a Midrange deck. Last time was Jund, this week my Naya feel prey to the u/w/b monster. What can I do against Esper? I have an American Flash deck that I have been tinkering with, however, is that the answer to it? To be honest, it was more an issue of Nephalia Drownyard taking ALL of my threats away from me. His board was always empty aside from Augurs, but I had nothing to swing with. The games kinda went like this...once I started swinging he would devour flesh my threats. Never cared how much life I had. Then, when I had him on the ropes and was going to swing for lethal it would be an end of turn Revelation to boost him back up beyond my reach for a turn. Even when I managed to miracle an Entreat for 5 angels...Supreme Verdict .So, what is the key to Midrange beating Esper?

Would Bant be an answer to this?

i found that the key for me to beating esper was predator ooze. indestructiblity makes him immune from supreme verdict or planeswalkers. which brings me to planeswalkers; esper dont not have anything for permanants besides planar cleansing (6 cmc). its never easy going against control but dragons maze should prove otherwise.

Are you telling me to run Planar Cleansing? Or are you suggesting Esper runs it? All the Esper I face uses Supreme Verdict over PC.

First of all, Bant is horrendous vs Esper. Any slow deck except Jund just has a horrible time trying to deal with Drownyards.

Now, with Jund... well Jund totally crushes Esper. I mean, Jund runs Garruk, Primal Hunter , Liliana of the Veil , Thragtusk , Rakdos's Return , Slaughter Games , the list goes on and on of the cards Jund has that Esper hates. So Jund should beat Esper easily; just resolve a planeswalker/Rakdos's Return Game 1, and then board into Slaughter Games and more Returns.

Oh, and many Esper lists run 4 Supreme Verdict and 2 Planar Cleansing . I personally run Terminus and Detention Sphere over Cleansing.

Now my Jund got crushed by Esper last week...it was a mix of Ghost Daddy escaping my removal and the Drownyards takeing my threats away. Exactly how does Jund combat that? I sideboarded Murders to take Ghost Daddy down, but I don't know what to about the Drownyards...aside from Ghost Quarter I have no answer.

Acidic Slime + Restoration Angel beats on esper control very hard as they really need their lands in almost every stage of the game to keep the control over the game.

A good deckbuilding tip would be to observe how competitive decks seem to morph week to week and ask yourself if anything they're doing might help you win against your bad matchups more. Acidic Slime started as a sideboard tech for junk reanimator (well for this season of standard) and now it's mainboarded for them as a way to beat their not perfect matchups.

Witchbane Orb and Pithing Needle are what I use to combat Drownyards and Planeswalkers. Seeing as they are artifacts, they can fit in any deck as well which is a plus and very rarely do people want to use their removal on such things but they must and it makes them waste it.

I second Mythimine's suggestions.

You don't need to combat Drownyards; you should be able to kill them pretty easily with walkers and Returns.

In Game 2, if they are bringing in Obzedat, Murder is good, as well as Putrefy which is coming with DGM. Just Slaughter Games their Revelations, resolve a threat, and you'll be fine.

Boros Charm stops Supreme Verdict . Elixir of Immortality can help combat the Drownyard. Use Boros Reckoner and Harvest Pyre to end the game for them. This is esp good if they are using Revelation. In response to Revelation you cast Harvest Pyre , and exile whatever is needed to kill them, then target Reckoner with it.

Oh, and for Naya, Assemble the Legion wrecks control.

detentionsphere your wrong, Counters, ORings, Detentionspheres LMFAO, A true control decks wates on your move and reacts. Use artafact removal and direct damige. BURN BABY BURN and Yes Sloughter games is a verry verry harsh card 2 use Vs Esper. I would say a Graxis Burn/mill would probly be best Vs Esper Control unless they use Psychic Spril or Elixer. Sloughter Games out witchbane orb then BURN. Oring Witchbane if you have 2. Or Nevermore

April 22, 2013 8:29 p.m.

@Dasberry: you mention Oblivion Ring , Detention Sphere , and countermagic... well most Esper lists run 0 O-RIngs/D-Spheres and only about two pieces of countermagic. Liliana, Garruk, Thragtusk , and Rakdos's Return are just too much for them to deal with.

Im not most Esper, I use all creature removal, counters and side board Orings,Nevermore, I run on type of counter but I have ways of bringing all them back w/o you knowing I use my graveyard. With Elixer's and Ulmate Tamyio. I dont need to worry about your Thragtusk and Rakdos, Ill O ring trag or exzile him and counter Rak, check it out Psycho's ESPER Control SuperFriends
