Looking to Build Rotation-Proof Jund

Standard forum

Alas! After a long hiatus from Standard I make my return!

I'm looking to build rotation proof Jund midrange. As I currently understand BFZ and SOI blocks both rotate out of standard in September. So I'm looking for a way to make a viable(semiviable) jund deck since next month is September.

All help and advice on the format are welcome! Help me jund em out!

I had actually been considering a jund deck myself to replace my energy deck later on.

I myself was thinking of trying something with the following cards:

The Scorpion God, Channeler Initiate, Abrade, Soul-Scar Mage, Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Fatal Push, Crocodile of the Crossing, maybe even Archfiend of Ifnir and some cycling lands.

Jund may be viable because the post rotation manabase can be good. Here's a hint: get 4x Dragonskull Summit and 4x Rootbound Crag. The ally colored Check lands are in my opinion going to have a big impact on the most viable decks post rotation and Jund can use two of them; a Mountain can activate both of them.

To begin post rotation being in red is a sure bet because Chandra has the potential to be the new Gideon, Ally of Zendikar an oppressive Planewalker. She's very good with Glorybringer which also gets a huge boost even more than now in Standard because the cards that keep it most in check Grasp of Darkness, Archangel Avacyn  Flip and Ishkanah, Grafwidow all rotate. Harnessed Lightning is also still here and it's excellent creature removal.

Black will continue to be good because of Fatal Push and Winding Constrictor, but the lose of Grasp is huge. Some of the best two drops for Jund are rotating, Grim Flayer and Sylvan Advocate. Who takes there place is a guess, but Constrictor makes the most sense because of 3 toughness and it's proven to be good already. It's versatile, can mix two strategies together energy and +1/+1 counters. Gifted Aetherborn also has real potential, as it's good right now, but it's also double black much harder on the manabase. Energy 2 drops are the real winners, Servant of the Conduit, Glint-Sleeve Siphoner and Constrictor are all powerful 2 drops for Jund.

Looking at all the current strategies that Jund can use energy is currently the most powerful with +1/+1 counters a runner up. For the time being I think you're much better off in energy with Jund than anything else.

multimedia Neither of the lands you suggested are standard legal.

Yes, currently they're illegal lands in Standard, but the question here is about post rotation Standard not current. That's why I said hint because all ally colored Check lands will be legal in Standard post rotation, thanks to Ixalan.

We have a rumor at best. If you want standard lands, pick up the fast lands and cyclelands as your best bet, cause those are gonna be in standard and the fast lands for sure will be played.

Well it's a lot more than a rumor because pictures of the lands were leaked. If you're wanting to be safe then Blooming Marsh, Sheltered Thicket and Canyon Slough are for sure legal in Standard post rotation.

The check lands make sense, if you think about it.

I wondered why the Cycling lands all had two land types, and that would explain why.

hwagner, I put together this quick decklist anyways. I still haven't quite narrowed it down to 60 cards and that is where I still need help. Also I think the mana base is still in need of a bit of tuning.

I was building this from the point of as if Bfz and Innistrad already have rotated and for that reason I chose to ignore Foreboding Ruins, Game Trail which I do admit would have helped the manabase, Grasp of Darkness, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and a few others.

It's a little bit pointless to build this deck before Ixalan has dropped.

You just don't know what good Creatures, and other cards, will be available.

I would be VERY surprised if we don't get another 2 drop destruction card to replace Grasp of Darkness, seeing that Grasp replaced Ultimate Price.
