Mill Versus Reanimator

So Gatecrash has handed us oodles of fun cards for Mill-style decks. What I want to know is, how dangerous would it be to run something like that? Are reanimator decks popular enough that running mill will just speed our defeat? Or are there ways for a mill deck to thwart reanimator?

I'd thought about splashing for Rest in Peace or running some kind of card:Tormod's Crypt, but those will hurt Consuming Aberration and Lazav, Dimir Mastermind .

...just remembered card:Grafdigger's Cage exists.

Still, how common do you think reanimator decks will be in the near future?

better then the cage is card:Tormod's Crypt though it hurts the abberation, its still a small price to pay so that reanimators dont abuse the cards u put in the GY

if you splash white you access to Rest in Peace if you're not your best bet is card:Tormod's Crypt im currently working on a mill deck that hopefully will stay competitive in standard

With good timing and use of counterspells you can stop reanimator without exiling the graveyard.

Counter the reanimation spells. Let their dumpers (Forbidden Alchemy , Faithless Looting , etc) go through. Those fuel mill. Kill anything that hits the board bigger than your creatures or is a threat.

yeah UmbrotheUmbreon is right. atm UB has plenty to stop those. personally try to Dissipate hardcast Unburial Rites and Dimir Charm on their flashback. hurts alot.

Sagi007: They can't flashback if you counter with Dissipate . The card would be exiled.

UmbrotheUmbreon: I think he was talking about using Dimir Charm when Unburial Rites was dumped.

What do you all think about using Vile Rebirth or Rise from the Grave ?

those really are not bad choice, gives you an extra body to block with or finish the game. thinking of adding those and card:Tormod's Crypt to my sideboard

@Spathic

I like those ideas, but how useful will a point removal be? I mean, aside from Unburial Rites and Immortal Servitude , how many other reanimator cards are there?

January 28, 2013 10:17 p.m.

In standard? I think those are the only two that actually return to the battlefield from the graveyard. Be careful though cause Immortal Servitude hits ALL creatures with the CMC X

Just remember that you only want to counter the reanimation spells. Save the kill spells for any big threats that get through, or for the threats that hit the table. Keep a board wipe in hand for Immortal Servitude , and let them dump cards from their graveyard. I used a modern legal deck and it destroyed a legacy legal reanimator because I utilized these methods :)

Hmm... card:Angel of Glory's Rise + Champion of the Parish isn't uncommon in Reanimator decks. The Angel would be a big think you'd have to keep a counterspell for.

So I'll be running counter spells and removal regardless of who I go up against, but card:Grafdigger's Cage looks most likely to help me out against reanimated, since it stops Unburial Rites , Immortal Servitude , and card:Angel of Glory's Rise cold (barring artifact removal).
