So, I have a playset of Mistcutter Hydra sitting in my lap, and I really want to do something in the Standard environment with it. Before doing so, I wanted some awesome feedback from an awesome community on an awesome deck idea.

What kind of cards synergise well with Mistcutter Hydra in Standard, and how would you build a deck around it?

It's a pretty straightforward creature I feel:

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , Sylvan Caryatid , Elvish Mystic to ramp up to it

Kalonian Hydra , to increase counters, Corpsejack Menace sadly doesn't work out too often

Nylea, God of the Hunt or Ghor-Clan Rampager to give it trample

For most people, it ends up as a sideboard card though, since it's always a bit behind the curve, while Arbor Colossus and Polukranos, World Eater give more P/T for the money and add more devotion as well.

I've always seen Mistcutter as an almost strictly sideboard card, to be honest...it's only really fantastic against blue. Otherwise, it's an exemplar of why hydras don't get played in Standard (Kalonian and Polukranos excepting, but they're hardly your typical hydra).

Just be sure to call him "Turdcutter Hydra" among your less mature friends.

MinscAndBoo I don't get it. Does it have to do with him or is it just to say turd?

That protection against blue/can't be countered is nice.

I can see Mistcutter Hydra put in a deck for a specific instance; if you know the person runs mainly blue drop it with billions of counters and trample or unblockable, then just roll over everyone.

So I'd say get some green ramp, Corpsejack Menace to double up on counters, then drop a Artful Dodge or Aqueous Form on Mistcutter once he's down on the field. Maybe have a counter in hand just in case of a bounce attempt as well.

Galvan: You can't use Artful Dodge or Aqueous Form on Mistcutter Hydra due to it having pro-blue, which means even your blue spells can't target it.

ljs54321 Good note, that totally didn't occur to me. I Guess trample would have to be the option then.

It tastes like Skylasher to me, and that is the taste of sideboard.

I personally think the hydra is good against any esper or azorious control match up. At late-mid-game, the hydra can one shot Jace, Architect of Thought and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver with a little ramp and even then, it'll provide huge pressure on their planeswalkers when it is cast with fewer cmc. It's also decent against discard based strategies since it comes into play with haste from the top of your deck.
