Mono-Blue Devotion in Standard

Apologies if this is a useless revival of an already-discussed topic.

So what about MUD in Standard? Could it be any good? There are still Master of Waves and Thassa, God of the Sea as the obvious win conditions, but with the rotation of Tidebinder Mage and Domestication, the potency of the deck dropped off considerably.

I've been thinking about the possibilities though. It might not be a huge Aggro strategy anymore, but it might just be possible to run the deck without getting stomped flat at FNM. Here are the thoughts I've been having:

  • Triton Shorestalker is a pretty good dude for a . Unblockable, and maybe we could even find a spot for Paragon of Gathering Mists to make it stronger. We've also got Frost Walker who can get our Stubborn Denial online pretty quick.

  • Since we've lost a ton of our aggressive threats, we have to try to control the board for at least some of the game while increasing our devotion to . We've got the nice option of Singing Bell Strike. There's also Military Intelligence, a draw engine that we will probably need which also powers up our devotion.

  • Would Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx be playable here? What about Thassa's Rebuff?

  • Monastery Siege might have potential here, too. Drawing through your deck is always great, but it also makes it very expensive for opponents to mess up your devotion with their own spells. At , that's a hell of a bargain.

  • There's also the rather derpy option of Invisibility. Kind of a bad card, but that ...

What other cards could work here? Am I missing anything? Maybe even our Jace, the Living Guildpact and Dig Through Time/Treasure Cruise? Let's hear some thoughts!

I actually witnessed someone using a Mindreaver recently, hopefully just for the Devotion.

Anyways, I feel that Cloudform is a key cog in the new MUD, with Frost Walker being a needed early threat. Bident of Thassa should still be an effective form of card advantage. But all in all, it will definitely need more control than before due to the aggro elements simply not being there.

I didn't even think about Cloudform until you mentioned it. I've also been wondering about Military Intelligence vs Bident of Thassa. I'm leaning toward Bident, especially if you run Triton Shorestalker

Anyway, after I posted this thread, I made this prospective deck list. I guess I'll build it and test it for funs at FNM.
