Multicolor control decks in Standard

Standard forum

With the release of Mana Confluence and creatures like Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix it seems like the mana fixing is there for 4-5 color control decks.

What are your guys' thoughts on this? I am thinking with a core of green and 2 x Mana Confluence it seems REALLY doable

Why would you need to though? UW has without a doubt the best control package in standard, so there really isn't a need to deviate from that too greatly. I could see trying to play american splashing for thoughtseize and doom blade, but that's about as far as I could see that right now. It just doesn't seem worth it.

The thing about Green is that there isn't much control in it right now. You get Putrefy , Gaze of Granite , and Abrupt Decay , aaaaaand that's about it. You don't get much help from Red, either.

You probably could put together some sort of 5-mana deck, but you'd need to spend more time fixing your mana while your opponent is slipping spells past you and killing you. Esper would be superior.

The idea I had was GRUB

Green is for mana fixing and holding off aggro through Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix . Not to mention that Kiora, the Crashing Wave and Xenagos, The Reveler are VERY good 4 drop 'walkers right now.

Red is for Xenagos, Rakdos's Return (against midrange/control), and Keranos, God of Storms (keeps the land draws out of your normal and keeps damage up as well).

Blue is obviously for Kiora, the Crashing Wave , Jace, Architect of Thought , Countermagic, etc

Black is for hand disruption (again, Rakdos's Return ), Thoughtseize , and Vraska the Unseen . Black also allows for Drown in Sorrow or Bile Blight against aggressive decks

Since UB is there, Far / Away is good vs control and you can even throw an Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver in the sideboard for good measure.

Having 4 colors gives you more options against the field as a whole, and not limited to what UW or Esper can do. RG gives us Polis Crusher which cannot be targeted by Detention Sphere or Banishing Light and even does well vs the "gods" or other enchantment creatures.

I really liked using 5 color control during INN-RTR Standard as I had tools against anything I wanted. 4 colors seems to be good right now as long as the mana doesn't become a problem.

I feel like you're just doing it wrong by not including White. White is the strongest control color right now, by far.

wait.... 4 color control and theres no white...?

the main problem i see with 4-color control is just too inconsistent, also no verdict or rev... you might as well make it 5 color control at that point

This is why Wizards strongly dislikes 4-color cards and there have only ever been 5 ever printed; if you're playing 4 colors, adding one more won't hurt your mana base any more than it is already is, but you'll open up your deck to all cards.

I agree. The core of the deck is really BUG with a splash of red for the above cards I mentioned. I haven't as of yet had any mana problems as the cards are mostly kept to the same CMC to come down on time

Turns 2-3 = mana ramper / Courser of Kruphix

Turns 4-5 = planeswalker

Turns 6+ = drop AEtherling or follow up with another planeswalker / Rakdos's Return
