My triumphant return to standard
Standard forum

So I have been spending a lot of time playing modern and legacy for the last few months. So much so, that I have neglected standard the entire time.
I figure theros will be a good time to go back into standard, and I read somewhere that esper is going to be a powerhouse due to the lack of esper cards leaving standard. Numbers don't lie, but my question is... Is esper going to be a "thing"? I was thinking about playing around with solar flare a little bit and I would like to know your input. Otherwise, I may just go with a golgari midrange.
Too much time in other formats made me standard retarded.

@Barandis, With the Scavenging Ooze running rampant everywhere there is not as much sadness with the departure of Snapcaster Mage . Though he will be missed, but before M14 a sweet lil monster he was lol.
@gnarlicide, Esper may not even become a thing after Theros release. Wizards has talked about slowing down the meta. Yeah we may get lands in Theros but probably not anything that will help with a three color deck. Your best bet would be golgari personally, it would be on the safer side especially if you were investing any money into it.

@gnarlicide, because of the departure of our good friends checklands, Esper will be slowed down immensly and may see way less play. I see mono-blue being stronger with the amount of counters currently in last block and m14. But we will see after Theros is spoiled.
@WovenNebula, Golgari or Gruul are both quite good atm, golgari just beats the face hard and Gruul beats the face fast. Also couldn't read yourname right, couldn't see the a

Also UB traditionally doesn't have a way to deal with enchantments so Dimir gets hosed again...Esper would be in a similar boat.
Who knows until we see the whole set. Maybe Mana Leak will come back now that Snappy is gone

I play Esper right now (Solar Flare), and it can win games. But I'm going to mourn the loss of Dissipate , Think Twice , and Lingering Souls more than anything.
I haven't seen any cards in the Theros spoilers so far that makes me think Esper will get a boost.

I hate to give the same old response but...there's no real way to tell.
There are a whole lot of people saying this, that, and the other is going to be good/bad/ugly after rotation. The fact is that we just can't know. Yeah, sure, Esper has some good cards that are surviving rotation, but at this point, we don't know if its best counter is just going to be lowly Cancel . There's Supreme Verdict and Sphinx's Revelation and Warped Physique , but two of those were severely out of favor at times in the last Standard season (and the reason for them being out of favor was Voice of Resurgence , which also does not rotate). Who knows what an entire new large set will bring?
Anyway, Snapcaster Mage is rotating out. That doesn't by any means kill blue (it existed just fine before Innistrad), but it means it's even harder to take stock in what the new blue-based decks will be like. I have a hard time even remembering what Magic was like before Snappy. I'd suspect a rise in tap-out control, but does that mean it'll be good? Who knows?
There have been 27 of the 249 Theros cards spoiled, and 20 of those are basic lands. The set is supposed to favor enchantments, but I can't think of any reason why that currently favors Esper in any way. The bottom line is that right now no one outside of Wizards knows whether Esper is good enough to be a thing.
