Need to organise my cards better

It's a good thing I ordered all those Crackling Doom ...

... now that I have found five while digging through my collection.

At least one was foil.

I used to have my collection basically sorted in 'good shit' and 'the rest.. by colour'. About a month ago I ordered my cards by colour, card type, and common theme (ie burn, pump, detain, bounce..etc etc) everything... the full sort.. it took a couple weeks. An hour or so a night while watching tv or whatever.

Top tip: go to a home depot or hardware store and get a bunch of the paint sample cards in each colour to use as coloured dividers.

Topest Tip... do non of that. Sure... it's great for finding what you want. But now when I work on decks, get new cards, etc... it's twice the work having to put everything back in order. Having a box of 'good shit' and wasting a couple bucks on needless purchases is worth more than the time this wretched organization sucks out of my life.

I don't go quite that in depth. For me it's Set>Color for uncommons and commons

For Rares usually 5$ and up (including some borderline staples) go into a binder

Less than 5$ get split Standard / Non Standard

I love the idea of the dividers. That will help me a lot.

Since FRF I have organized things better. I still have some old KTK cards in piles which need to be filed.

I organise commons and uncommons in Fat Packs like this:

  • By colour: colourless, two or more colours, red, blue, black, white, green (those are the order I most enjoy playing colours)

  • By CMC: the more of the same colour in the CMC the further down th back it goes

  • By type: enchantment, instant, sorcery, aura, creature

Rares and Mythics go into a folder.

For me I do set->color->alphabetical. Unsorted cards are only separated by color.

You can also use the inventory function on this site to keep track of what you have, so when I get new stuff I make a private deck list called BfZ Fat Pack or whatnot, and click the box to sync with inventory. I think ending up with more then 4 copies is pretty common, sometimes if I can't find something I need I will just buy another. Like you, my mythics and foil rares are in binders, my rares are in deck boxes sorted by color.

Not sure if they sell Super Shoe boxes in the UK but if so they're great for storing large quantities of cards. The dividers that come in deck boxes fit perfectly in the SuperShoe

I figured you're from UK with the "colour" spelling. :)

Sorry but you figured incorrectly.

I understand your suggestion though.

Side question for those of you that do it. How much benefit do you really find in organizing by set? I considered it in my grand sort, but figure that.. if i was, say, looking for a Thoughtcast, I really don't want to have to remember that its a Sorcery from Mirrodin (or have to look it up), but instead just need to know.. "ya, that's somewhere in blue under draw "

I'm genuinely curious.

It helps a lot more if you play more than one format. I play standard so being able to know these, now 5 boxes, are all I can pull from makes that easier for me. When I play Modern it's from this point forward, and so on. The boxes just get rotated along and it'd be more work to de-set-sort them later.

That makes sense.

The other thing I try to do is pull out cards that have been reprinted and put them in the box of their latest set.

That way, if I'm looking for Negate, I don't have to go fishing through every set that's ever had it.
