Negate vs Dispel

Does anyone else think it's weird that people are mainboarding 2 dispels and sometimes don't even have a negate in the side board? With so many non-instant threats is it really that bad to pay 1 more colorless to be able to counter all those Gideons and Silkwraps and stuff? I feel like 1 of each makes more sense

The notion behind doing so is that it's easier to leave up that one mana for protection. It catches all the cruises and digs that get thrown around + blankets some removal. It's usually not feasible to think of casting something like a mantis rider and keeping up negate. Besides, people seem to also have split opinions over disdainful stroke and negate. The stroke catches anything of real value that negate would get too, but with this, you also get creatures.

TheDevicer Dispel doesn't counter Treasure Cruise. Also, it depends on the deck. Straight control deck would want to utilize Negate more. Dispel is straight protection oriented. If you want to "morph" your deck after board into a more controlling deck, Negate would almost be more ideal. If you are an aggressive deck that wants to maintain board presence, Dispel is probably better. Now if more Ruinous Paths and more board wipes pop up, Negate would become more popular.

Sounds about right, I've been running into a lot of Ruinous Paths and Languishes around here so maybe it's a better option for me in the local meta anyway.

Dispel is great versus another Control deck but I'd rather not count on that.

In the UW Control my partner and I set up, we've gone for Negate for its versatility, especially against Planeswalkers.

To me it's like Siding Erase instead of Fate Forgotten. Erase is better if you're only facing Enchantments, but it is also putting all your eggs into one basket.

I think it depends a lot on what your deck can/can't handle. If your deck's real problem is sorceries/planeswalkers, Negate is the better choice, but if the only reason you run negate is to deal with instant speed removal, I think Dispel is more solid. The other deciding factor is deck speed, as faster decks usually run Dispel because it streamlines the deck, and one mana can really make a difference.

Been playing Esper control in various forms for awhile and often go 4-0 (haven't jumped into any major events since I started playing again) but I think I have my Esper building down perfectly. I messed around with some Grixis and other stuff in the past and just happened to have everything in both the dark and regular jeskai lists and I'm looking to give something similar a try for a change.

The one dark jeskai dragons list that barely missed the top 8 also looks intriguing, but I always like to lean to the more controlish decks. So far I have just played a few games with Finkel/Tutenwalds list against my friends, but dispel is a pretty dead card against their specific decks. I think I will just MB 1 negate and dispel and see how they perform. I also think most of the dark jeskai lists could benefit from a charm or 2, but that's another story :)
