I want to do a Grixis control build with the main win cons being mill and in cases where that gets shut down, dropping a finisher like AEtherling . I want to use Notion Thief , but is he really just a sideboard card? I don't see much value unless I know my opponent is going to be Sphinxing on my turn or something.
Playing spells like Toil / Trouble with Notion Thief out is awesome

this.
He's solid as a soft counter to Sphinx's Revelation and I've had decent success with him. The 3/1 doesn't hurt either.

Not too sure how old this post is, but Notion Thief 's ability is permanent. Not just for one draw spell. You can combo him with stuff like Reforge the Soul , have your opponent discard their hand, then you draw 14 and they're left with an empty hand going "WAT"

Notion Thief + Whispering Madness (preferably ciphered onto an Invisible Stalker ) = Best mill ever... self mill that is... Laboratory Maniac for the win.
Opponent gets 1 card to use per turn, and will discard it if he doesn't use it the turn he draws it.
In the mean time, you are drawing cards exponentially. You should have the Maniac in play, and mill out in 2 turns.
I have a deck that can get the combo off on Turn 3.

Sorry... meant Thief in play turn 3... combo off on turn 4... win on turn 5 or 6... maybe 7, if you have to wait a turn to ensure you get the maniac in play.

He is OK against other decks as being a 3 power dude, he trades with most of the creatures in the format like Thragtusk , Huntmaster, Flinthoof Boar and Geralf's Messenger but his paltry toughness means he is a straight up trade or a chump block at most.
If the meta around your place has a lot of midrange / control decks then he probably is worth mainboarding, sideboard otherwise.
