Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper Decks

Standard forum

I really want to build a Standard deck around Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper. It's my favorite card from BFZ.

One idea I had was a U/W/R/G combo deck with Jeskai Ascendancy. Noyan is nuts with an active Ascendancy and can easily animate all of your lands and generate enough mana to go through your entire deck (lands that are creatures untap with Jeskai Ascendancy), making your lands huge and swinging for the win. This deck would splash green for Bright to Light and maybe Rattleclaw Mystic.

The other idea was a U/W control or tempo deck with things like Clutch of Currents, Planar Outburst, Encircling Fissure, Roil Spout, Scatter to the Winds, and Halimar Tidecaller.

Are either of these ideas viable? Which one would be better to build and why?

I don't think Green warrants the strain on the mana, so just UWR would be better.

I personally like the Ascendancy version more. I may be biased because I ran Jeskai Ascendancy Combo for many months but I love the card. Its not very interactive with other decks but still very fun to play.

I think green will not be an issue for you. All the Jeskai Ascendancy Combo decks were four colors with Sylvan Caryatid and Jeskai Ascendancy and now that your Flooded Strand can fetch a green source in Canopy Vista it gets even easier to play four colors. Before it was very clunky with a lot of Scry Lands, Mana Confluence, and Tri Lands.

My only issue is that he himself costs 5. In the Jeskai Ascendancy Combo you want to win turn 4-5. This is because of what I said before that there is no interaction with your opponents and so whatever they play will hit you, easily getting your life below 10 by turn 4. Your deck would have to run a play set of Radiant Flames and other cards like this to survive the early turns.

I am currently running a U/W Awaken Control deck with Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper as my primary win-con. It is a lot of fun. I am still fine tuning it. And it has a lot of potential. I may or may not end up going Esper with it just to have better removal (ie Utter End, Ruinous Path, etc...). But that will happen over time if need be. Check it out: Pepperidge Farm Remembers

I feel like Dragonlord Ojutai would be a much better win condition in straight U/W control. Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper isn't very resilient and I don't foresee many games where I'll get to untap with him.

I like the Jeskai Ascendancy version as it seems more fun and explosive. I played Ascendancy combo and Ascendancy tokens before rotation so I may just go this route.

I am running American control feat. Noyan Dar & Jeskai Ascendancy. That combo plus draws spells is totally bonkers, and I feel like control will do the best job keeping the combo secure.

Doc28: Do you have a list? I'm curious to see what a tested combo/control list would look like.

I think a control deck with Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper/Jeskai Ascendancy as a win condition alongside Dragonlord Ojutai is where I'm headed. Ascendancy works very well with Ojutai (untapping to give Hexproof in response to removal) so the slot isn't wasted at all. I want the combo available but I don't want to rely on it to win.

It is still in testing, and I hope to fine tune it and play it at GP Oakland in January. The sideboard is also a work in progress.

Thanks for the list, +1 from me.

What do you think of running Dragonlord Ojutai alongside Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper as finishers in a Jeskai Ascendancy shell? is 5-6 win conditions too many?

I don't think it's a bad idea. However, I feel like this type of deck can just win using manlands from some of its other spells (Coastal Discovery, Scatter to the Winds, Planar Outburst, as examples) if need be. Ojutai might be a bit redundant for this list I made.

I've also thought of an idea based around him. I got four in the recent boxes I opened which makes him an ideal candidate for a deck. However I seem to be horrible with building control decks (or at least playing them). If you happen to get a good one working please inform me through message.

Also a little tip to help play test when at home there's a program called cockatrice from woogerworks. It really does take some time to get to learn it but man it has helped so much..... the only issue is you've got to remember a lot of people have their perfect ideal decks not the decks they own in real life

lukehugh: My list was previously posted. I'd like to think that it is pretty good, so that might help you out. Cockatrice and Untap are a couple of my favorite ways to test decks against other people.

Most people in my local area have their "perfect ideal decks" so I prefer to test in person. If we don't have the cards we just write the name of the proxy on a basic land.

Awakened Ascendancy

I use Planar Outburst to control the board, Jeskai Ascendancy to untap the lands when casting cantrip spells. Usually by turn 8-10 I can have all my lands awakened and able to swing for lethal.

It looks like Noyan Ascendancy made day 2 at an Open SCG last weekend: Deck List

I'll be testing this list out for sure. It seems like a lot of cantrips but they add consistency at the expense of early game interaction.

I recommend a Noyan Dar awaken deck thoroughly in B/W/U. It's been the best BFZ deck I have put together. Better than landfall has been for me by far. Check out Roil pain in the ass. The Halimar Tidecaller is great, due to board wipe/control recursion. You will lose a couple lands, but the decks win/loss ratio in a casual format has been fantastic.
