PLA vs STORM CROW

If you haven't followed the Pro Tour twitch feed, you may not know what PLA is. PLA is life. PLA trumps all. In all seriousness, PLA= Pearl Lake Ancient and it was showcased by Owen Turtenwald. It spiked from $2 to $20 in less than an hour. Speculators are getting silly now.

Wait, what. It can't go that high, it's in my newly made budget deck!

SCG has them at $1.49... Sold out though. This card is completely over-hyped and still bad. I will gladly spend multiple removal spells to force you to jam your lands back in your hand so you can't play anything.

I'm pretty sure whatever deck runs PLA runs counterspells just in case something like that happens.

The fact that this card is now playable shows how much standard has slowed down/changed. :O

They're only running like 8, maybe 12 counter spells main, 4 of them (Disdainful Stroke ) don't hit any of the removal spells you're going to be using on it. And this is all assuming they haven't countered anything you've played at all. Pearl Lake Ancient is bad, and is only doing well for 1 person because no one expected it.

Why would you run 4x Disdainful Stroke over 4x Dissolve ? Dissolve is the better counter for its effect.

More than likely PLA is a 2x in any decks running it because 7 mana is a lot and they can cram a few other 5-mana and 6-mana threats as well. Plus while the 3-land evasion effect is good to save it, it's not very good for recasting it, so you don't want too many clogging your hand.

Granted, I will freely admit that I haven't seen any lists, so I could just be spewing hot air.

Re-read what I said? reading comprehension is hard. 8-12 main board counters. 4 Dissolve 4 Disdainful Stroke , with the possibility of some Dissipate Negate s. Pearl Lake Ancient was being run in like 1 version of the deck, maybe 2. The other U/B control decks were running 4 Prognostic Sphinx

Yeah, see, I'm under the (false) assumption that people play at least 11 counterspells, 4x Dissolve and Dissipate and 3x+ Disdainful Stroke . :/ It's the way I play.

Also, check the TCG high. They hit $20 this evening at one point when they sold out everywhere.

even still, Disdainful Stroke hits only 2 removal spells that I can think of, being Utter End and Silence the Believers . Your Dissolve and Dissipate are going to have other targets besides Hero's Downfall Abzan Charm Devouring Light Banishing Light Suspension Field . Granted you're not always gunna have certain things etc, but I just feel like PLA is over-hyped and still trash. Control players should stick to esper or america/jeskai to find better wincons

2/10 would play Prognostic Sphinx instead. Maybe even Necropolis Fiend if it's a UB deck

I'm afraid to say, Island will always be the #1 card in magic. Pearl Lake Ancient , although mythic, has nothing on Island .

DrFunk27 you never ever ever go by the high price on TCGplayer. It is not at all an accurate representation of the price; in theory I could list a mountain for $20. Currently the price on TCG is around $5-$6 with shipping considered. Did it go up? Yes. But you are completely misunderstanding and thus misrepresenting by how much. The foil isn't even that much.
