Planeswalker Decks
Standard forum

After building a 5 color, all-walker deck with sandman332 a few weeks ago, I began testing it on cockatrice. Since then, i've noticed a few things I would like to discuss with a few of the greater magic minds that can be found on this site.
Why is this not seeing play in standard? With the inclusion of Kiora, the Crashing Wave in the new set, decks like Bant Superfriends starting showing up in the meta running 8+ walkers. If that can be a thing, why aren't people on the competitive circuit making sunburst decks that utilize 5-8 different planeswalkers?
People who lose to this deck react (generally) in one of two ways: instant hatred, or curiosity. Why can't I find an opponent who sees this deck play and appreciates the amount of thought that went into it? It wasn't easy developing a deck with 18 walkers that can beat some of the best decks in standard right now. Granted, this deck is weak against very aggressive builds and burn decks, but everything has a weak spot. I'm constantly berated with "all you did was take all the best walkers and throw them in one deck" and "this deck has no mechanic, it's just random cards." Does nobody see what I see?
I have only been playing Magic for a year, and I am the first to admit that I still have a lot to learn about the intellectual side of the game. Understanding synergy between cards, thinking outside of the box, and playing one step ahead of my opponent are things that I am constantly striving to better within myself, and piloting this deck helps me achieve these goals. Personally, I think this idea can work in both the local meta and on the competitive circuit, but I would like some input from greater minds.
What do YOU think of 5 color walker decks?
Can they win in standard?
I know that posting a decklist is not what this forum is for, but in this specific case I would like to do it so that we can further the discussion on the concept.
Overwhelmed by Walkers Playtest
Standard
SCORE: 8 | 22 COMMENTS | 1163 VIEWSFrom my playtesting against competitive decks, i've noticed similar results. Control decks are a great matchup for this deck, as well as green ramp and most midrange builds like Golgari or Selesnya. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver is the only walker that gets to be a 4 of, because it holds so much power in this deck when it comes out at turn 3.
Do you think this deck has potential to see standard play on a more competitive level than a LGS?

I think the only thing that will hold it back is making consistent land drops in the colors you need.

i actually playtested my current standard deck against your walker deck a week or so ago. It's actually REALLY really good when up against other control decks and midrange decks. Kiora and xenagos, elspeth, and ashiok really cause a problem, and with so many walkers, It would be hard for a lot of decks to have answers to every single one.
