Predictions of the new meta

Standard forum

Just having a bit of fun here and sharing a few observations. So while testing on cockatrice and reading a few articles I've come up with a few decks I expect to see.

: Aggro. Newish deck but it plays a ton of generally solid stuff and has a relatively easy mana base. It's basically thopters and eldrazi with a side of removal. This deck will probably pack the new sin guy.

vamps. I expect this deck will flex between aggro and midrange depending on what the meta needs. It's pretty flexible.

madness: jace plus thing in the ice plus madness stuff. It'll flex between midrange or control but will very likely settle into control.

: control using similar elements as the grixis deck but removing the madness for token generators and more planeswalkers.

ramp: it's still going to be pretty hard to beat world breaker.

tempo: centered around collected company. Basically plays a ton of value dudes

TheHroth says... #2

Collected Company will still be a thing.

I've been testing Superfriends and the deck is pretty crazy.

I posted a pretty in depth list of decks I thought could do well in this thread I didnt get all of them but I also explained why or why not

March 22, 2016 9:14 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #5

Well that's annoying. Hadn't even seen that one.

March 22, 2016 9:17 p.m.

Rasta_Viking29 says... #6

I've been thinking / Midrange topping out at Chandra, Flamecaller and definitely including Sin Prodder. Might splash for , , or depending on how things shake out with mana bases.

I plan on working on my Eldrazi Ramp as well but am thinking it might need to be less rampy and more controlling. Ugin is a huge loss to the deck and I think it is going to take more than Chandra to stabalize.

Atony1400 says... #7

tokens and prowess will still be a thing. Prowess is alive and well on Innistrad, so I expect it to make a fierce return! (especially with the new rare land cycle)

March 22, 2016 9:46 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #8

Rasta_Viking29 i think you'll find that chandra will do the trick considering there will be no tasigur or rhino.

Atony1400 the wb tokens will be a variant of the esper deck i mentioned. Prowess i haven't seen anything on.

i'm testing a ramp and seems to be doing good, if interested here's the decklist selesnya ramp post khans obviously can still change until the full spoiler

March 22, 2016 9:57 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #10

Please don't advertise decks here. This is meta talk.

March 22, 2016 9:58 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #11

On the subject of selesnya. Another deck I've seen around is a weenies deck built around Consul's Lieutenant Thraben Inspector and Thalia's Lieutenant and the new sigarda with dromokas command and stuff to back it up.

Atony1400 says... #12

Ah, I see VampireArmy.

March 22, 2016 10:03 p.m.

Mortem says... #13

B/W seems well poised wit all of its new toys... I mean, it gets everything from walkers (Sorin, Grim Nemesis) to removal (Anguished Unmaking and Declaration in Stone) to really good beaters (Mindwrack Demon).

I personally kind of like R/B not-vampires with Kolaghan's Command, Goblin Dark-Dwellers, Mindwrack Demon, and Sin Prodder.

This is me just guessing though.

March 22, 2016 10:04 p.m.

alcor91 says... #14

i was just trying to say that i think that selesnya ramp can probably do better than gruul ramp in the next meta

March 22, 2016 10:05 p.m.

I think that Gruul Midrange could be a thing. Maybe even Jund, depending on what else gets spoiled.

March 22, 2016 10:08 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #16

For a jund deck it would probably be some combination of the removal gudstuff mixed with arlin kalitas that goyf reject and maybe Chandra at the top.

March 22, 2016 10:16 p.m.

Pretty much. It might need a good discard spell first though.

March 22, 2016 10:18 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #18

Well between Duress and Transgress the Mind they're pretty close.

March 22, 2016 10:19 p.m.

EmblemMan says... #19

Jund wont live through the land rotation I dont think. The land base will be too slow

March 22, 2016 10:23 p.m.

TheHroth says... #20

Jund's mana will be great, not slow. Sure it loses fetches but so does every deck. Having access to two ally cycles (Cinder Glade, Smoldering Marsh, Game Trail, and Foreboding Ruins) and two enemy cycles (Llanowar Wastes and Hissing Quagmire) of good dual lands is more than enough, plus Deathcap Cultivator is an on-colour dork.

It has access to discard, great removal spells, Kolaghan's Command, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Arlinn Kord...It will be a strong deck for sure.

Lukecifer says... #21

I really like B/U/W Super friends... using mostly destroy concepts and board wipes, new Sorin and Jace with Ob and Narset.

March 22, 2016 10:49 p.m.

EmblemMan says... #22

it depends on how you build it because you ahve to remember tango lands need basics to come in untapped and the new lands dont come in untapped with llanowar wastes quagmire and the wrong basics. Nor do they come in untapped if you dont have any lands in hand. Plus the tango lands dont come in untapped with the new lands so really you have a non-bo in the deck with the two duals fighting each other and to have a consistent mana base able to hit 3 colors when you need it you need the duals so you end up playing a lot and they dont play well together without fetches. I promise that a lot of times you will be playing 20 guildgates between the 4 duals and quagmire. The only way I see to build it is to focus on a 2 color combo and then splash a third one.

clayperce says... #23

FAMOUSWATERMELON,
I agree that Gruul mid-range is definitely going to be a thing, but I'm not sure it'll be any good. But we're going to see a lot of it.

I think there's going to be a very narrow slice of Gruul Aggro too. It's looking really strong, but the draw of mid-range is much higher.

March 22, 2016 10:59 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #24

Ragon_Wolfbane saw your question in the spoiler forum. These are some decks you can expect to see.

March 23, 2016 12:34 a.m.

I think moving towards a Orzhov control deck with Sorin, Grim Nemesis, To the Slaughter, a copy of Descend upon the Sinful, then add 2 copies of Anguished Unmaking in the main board and 2 in the sideboard, Dead Weight in the mainboard if lots of aggro is present in the meta or a sideboard card against aggro that turns on Delirium. You can put up Heir of Falkenrath in the deck as well to put a serious threat on the board. What do you guys think?

March 23, 2016 12:52 a.m.

Argy says... #26

Ragon_Wolfbane I think you just described a deck I've been working on.

March 23, 2016 2:18 a.m.

Argeaux I think the idea is really solid right now with all the removal and card draw. The issue with blacks card draw though is the loss of life and I'm afraid aggressive decks may be a thing in the standard format with vampires and werewolves being very possible deck. So you would need things like Shambling Vent,Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, and that enchantment that makes 1/1 vampires with lifelink to stabilize your board. Maybe I'm just a little paranoid of aggro even with swiftspear leaving.

March 23, 2016 4:12 a.m.

Argy says... #28

Funnily, I have both Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet (who is just great for Control anyway) and Shambling Vent in the deck.

The second ability of Sorin, Grim Nemesis can also address life loss, although you need to be alive by Turn 6 to be able to take that route.

I might try to pull together a mini gauntlet to get people started for the new season. Mostly going to try and link articles, not user made deck lists.

VampireArmy,
That would be AWESOME! Thanks tons ... in advance :-)

Slowgod says... #32

I am making MAYBE Zombies. I don't care if it's not one of the "best decks" It will be fun and awesome. At first I considered adding red mainly for that madness lightning bolt card, but I think BUG is better. It's got nice manland options, sunken hollow and probably a couple of the new showlands. I excited!

off the top of my head something like...4x Risen Executioner, 4x Relentless Dead, 1x Geralf's Masterpiece, 1x Skaab Goliath 2-3 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet 2x Baloth Null, 4x Diregraf Colossus, 4x Compelling Deterrence some Shambling Goblins, Shamble Back, some counters / removal and that new UB zombie just spoiled today :)

March 23, 2016 11:25 a.m.

Argy says... #33

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet has gotten waaaaay expensive.

My bank account started to cry when I bought a few. Luckily I had cracked one.

nolooloo says... #34

Esper dragons ain't going anywhere. Even with fetches gone the mana will be fine, and there are supplements to the loss of Dig.

March 24, 2016 11:10 p.m.

EmblemMan says... #35

nolooloo esper dragons is going somewhere it loses one of its dragons which is drifty D. It loses crux so ojutai dies to its board wipes and dig was a VERY important card. Theres a difference in playing 2 mana get cards 7 cards into your deck and 5 mana draw 2-3 cards or whatever you would change it to.

March 24, 2016 11:36 p.m.

EmblemMan says... #36

JK i forgot they stopped playing drifty D but my other points still stand.

March 24, 2016 11:38 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #37

For those who care, i did end up writing something of a mini article showcasing some lists i found. I'm unsure if it's getting published here or not but either way it'll be on the forums soonish.

March 24, 2016 11:46 p.m.

Rothus says... #38

WU control will be a thing. With Declaration in Stone and the mass unsummon effect of Thing in the Ice; control will be a lot more easier and not rely on tons of mass wipes to keep you safe.

March 26, 2016 12:08 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #39

I think that's still basically esper though i suppose the correct way to put it is esper will be an extension of uw control. Sadly, not a lot of people are brewing right now so it's hard to put together a list without referencing tappedout too often. Unfortunately, that's left me with referencing channel fireball a lot more but hey. What can you do?

March 26, 2016 12:11 p.m.

Argy says... #40

Brewers unite!

March 26, 2016 12:33 p.m.

Rothus says... #41

Well the problem with Esper is that a lot of black removal is double black. With the removal of fetch lands; it will be a lot harder to hit double black so easily.

Not saying that it's impossible; but it won't be as consistant.

March 26, 2016 1:48 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #42

I've played against it a few times. Didn't seem to have an issue despite the players being different. Uw will be more consistent but have less answers. That's the beauty though. Options.

March 26, 2016 1:52 p.m.

I've been tinkering around with UB after not playing standard because 4 mana standard kind of put me off. I tried straight control first, but it seems like its in a worse position than UW, because of the lack of wipes/bounce (Crush of Tentacles could get you there, but its not like the Perilous Vault that it had last standard). After playing with it some more, I feel like there is a really good shell for some Madness/Delirium deck. Elusive Tormentor, Heir of Falkenrath, and Forgotten Creation for good discard outlets plus lots of things that can recur from the yard, such as Geralf's Masterpiece and Ghoulsteed. Thoughts on the idea?

March 27, 2016 7:44 p.m.

What about Jeskai Control post rotation, you can use nahiri, jace, and some of the great spells like Declaration in stone, and a bunch of counters. Play tested and found that it is better than esper because of the Fevered Visions. What do you think?
