Question about what is considered a permanent

I was under the impression that when you cast an instant or sorcery, that spell was considered a permanent while priority is passed to the opponent. I was told otherwise at FNM tonight. Whats the word on this?

A permanent is anything that exists on the battlefield. As the stack is not "on the battlefield", they are not permanents. The permanent types are: Land, Creature, Enchantment, Artifact, Planeswalker

From the RuleBook:

110.4. There are five permanent types: artifact, creature, enchantment, land, and planeswalker. Instant and sorcery cards cant enter the battlefield and thus cant be permanents. Some tribal cards can enter the battlefield and some cant, depending on their other card types. See section 3, Card Types.

Yeah, an instant or sorcery is never on the battlefield, even if you throw down your Twiddle onto the table next to your Little Girl . It's cast, it resolves, and it goes to the grave without ever being a permanent or being on the battlefield

Also note that even a creature, for instance, is not a permanent UNTIL it gets onto the battlefield.

Nobody mentioned emblems. They stick like permanents, except are not subject to the same rules. Can't be targeted, destroyed or exiled, even Gaze of Granite and Ratchet Bomb miss.

Emblems aren't actually permanents, and don't ever enter the battlefield, they live in the command zone. There's currently nothing in the game that can interact with them other than creating them.
