My buddy just started using tis combe with Vexing devil + Infernal plunge. I need to know if this is alright to do, because its pretty brutal. So he plays vexing devil, and I pay the 4 life. After I pay that 4 life, He sac's vexer for infernal plunge instead, followed by brimstone volley. Can he sac vexer for something else after I've taken the 4 damage from it? Please let my know, thanks :)

I would think not and think it would go one of these ways.

You can not sacrifice a creature to pay for two abilities. This means to me, that he can't sacrifice vexing devil to infernal plunge and allow you to pay 4 damage to sacrifice it.

In addition, infernal plunge is a sorcery and can only played as part of the main phase, and can't be cast as a response to your action, like an instant or tapping. So the target for infernal plunge is invalid if you take the 4 and then he needs to sacrifice the devil for that. It is either you take the 4 from vexing devil to sacrifice or you don't and he sacrifices it to infernal plunge.

I'm still learning the rules, and would like to know which (if any) it is.

Sounds right to me, just based solely off of the sacrificing uses, and that sorcery spells can't be cast as instants

Yeah...you can't use one resource to pay two costs...it'd be like tapping one island to pay for Counterspell

Even if it was an instant, once the ability on Vexing Devil starts to resolve, it has to resolve completely before any other spells or abilities may be cast/used.

In this case, his effect would resolve, sacrificing him and dealing 4 damage, before anyone has a chance to interact with him in any way.
