Rattleclaw Mystic - Post Rotation

Was wondering what people thought about Rattleclaw Mystic after Theros and M15 rotates out. They are currently at my store for $1 so I'm debating getting them now just to see if they would spike after Sylvan Caryatid and Elvish Mystic rotate out and Rattleclaw Mystic possibly becomes the mana dork of the rotation.

Rattleclaw Mystic will go up, but not by a lot. I'd say that he might hit $2-3 or so.

It might go up a few dollars, but let's not forget that the last Zendikar block contained a lot of ramp/land strategies, so we're likely going to see that again.

Are you asking an economics question or a meta question?

Sort of both. I figure the only rampers, without knowing ZEN, would be Whisper of the Wilds and Rattleclaw. Since most Green based strategies ramp, these seem like a likely candidate to be playable. And their playability would lead to obviously an increase in value.

Oh and I didn't play ZEN so I don't know what was typical in that set.

I definitely think Rattleclaw Mystic and Shaman of Forgotten Ways will be the new "standard ramp" as Whisperer of the Wilds and Circle of Elders are too situational to be good

if Rattleclaw Mystic and Shaman of Forgotten Ways are the new "standard ramp" (as you put it) after rotation, then green ramp strategies will now exist. Having a turn 1 mana dork is huge and is what actually puts you ahead of your opponent. If these are the only options for mana dorks then you'll still be setting up on turns 2 and 3, which is typically where you want to start ramping into your larger creatures.
I'm not saying they won't see play (especially if they're the only options) but green ramp strategies won't be as strong or exist like they do now if this is all we get.

Being able to play a 7 drop on turn 4 is still pretty good... especially in an era of 7 drop dragons

it is a good card for producing a formidable Surrak, the Hunt Caller ready to attack on turn three. It is also the three colors used in the descent of the dragons combo decks and if someone wanted to get out Sarkhan Unbroken

Well I really wouldn't be suprised if we saw another mystic reprint or some other cheap 1 drop mana dork. A bunch of 2 and 3 drop ramp creatures are not what the ramp decks want/need (though they can help support). Also, it's obvious we'll be getting a new set of lands to use as the scry lands rotate out, so I feel like 3 color strategies will still be legitimate options. Which 3 colors could be up in the air depending on which colors are released in which sets though, obviously. Even though Khans block isn't tri-color focused, the 3 color clans were obviously a big part of it and I don't think they would eliminate most of what would be the Khans of Tarkir set by making 3 color decks not an option.

With magic origins coming out I would not be to surprised to see Birds of Paradise or Llanowar Elves reprinted.

Agree partially on that statement. Whisperer of the Wilds in the format with any creatures is viable and not situational. I do agree Circle of Elders is very situational. They will probably be reprinting basic elf ramp.

In a standard green ramp deck Whisperer of the Wilds is probably a far better option than Rattleclaw Mystic, in reality. The additional colors are situational and only necessary if your playing temur. When all your really looking for is the ramp only providing green isn't any kind of a set back and the ferocious trigger is actually quite easy to achieve in this type of deck so it's not unreasonable to think that this will provide 2 mana a good amount of the time.
The only thing the mystic has on the whisperer is the fact it has 2 power, but that's also the same argument people made for rattleclaw over Sylvan Caryatid, and while not the same as Whisperer of the Wilds, we've all seen how much more relevant being able to chump block against aggro decks has been than having the additional power to "potentially" attack with.

I would be willing to bet a hefty sum that a one-drop dork is printed in Origins. They've had one in every core set since like M6. Also, Caryatid and Rattleclaw were in the first sets of their respective blocks. Let it play out.

Also, ode to the Green ramp decks for those few months before rotation if said one-drop isn't named Elvish Mystic.

I find it highly unlikely to think that we will not see a 1cmc mana dork for green, whatever it may be (please Birds of Paradise). Probably likely that we'll see a version of Llanowar Elves or Elvish Mystic, but other possibilities exist. And mono-green would probably rather run Whisperer of the Wilds than Rattleclaw Mystic any day of the week.

there is no more Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic is the functional reprint that we get now.

I'd pick them up. They fit nicely into most green-based ramp strategies.
