Reanimator in Theros
Standard forum

So, as a long time player of Reanimator, I'm sad to say goodbye to Unburial Rites . However, I think Theros has some promising targets for reanimation. I'm hoping that It's possible to keep reanimating in Standard after we lose Rites.
I'm thinking Esper Solar Flare is the best bet (as seen in my deck, Post-Roast Esperanimator), however I think a 4-color variant splashing Red or Green could also work.
Thoughts?

I think the biggest problem will be how to get the creatures, but not the spells, in the yard. That's the main reason why Unburial Rites was so good in Standard

Don't forget Rescue From The Underworld as well

Ya know, the whip really isn't that great. I mean, Seance is way better, and that didn't see play either.

Deathrite Shaman didn't stop it. It surely made it more difficult to play, but it was played nonetheless.

Re animator has always been one of my favorite strategies but now a days cards like Crypt Incursion make it unplayable.

What made junk rites really unstoppable was you could self mill yourself an Unburial Rites into your yard and flash it back. It also made it so you had a maximum amount of eight casts of Unburial Rites . When you combined that with Thragtusk , Restoration Angel and Angel of Serenity , you're sitting very pretty with a high amount of health and multiple ways to bring difficult to deal with creatures into the game. Unburial Rites is so powerful that it has found its way into other formats, notable modern as part of the Gifts Reanimator combo.
Human Reanimator was just hilarious and an infinite combo, but it also used Unburial Rites .

@Killabeetle, Crypt Incursion never affected reanimator in standard or otherwise. It was moreso cards like Scavenging Ooze that contributed to its lack of popularity.

They said Grafdigger's Cage was end of reanimator, and it still had top finishes, scavenging ooze isn't going to kill it either, make it harder, sure, but not kill it.

Well Junk Rites is already dead, we're just debating whether or not reanimator will come back in any way. It looks possible, but I feel like there's a missing link. Something to bring back instants/sorceries from the yard, or a better reanimation spell. There's currently Grim Return and Rescue from the Underworld , they just feel too contrived to make reanimator a tier 1 deck.

Unburial Rites was good due to two casting, but in a heated match, how often was it really casted two times from a single card? Possibility is there sure, but reality of matter is going to come down to resource management. Figure out how to get stuff into the graveyard and know what to answer and it'll be good game as usual.

I think Erobos' Whip will be put to good use.
