Sage of Hours + Ajani. Why not something simpler?

I've seen a lot of discussion over the past few days and I'm kinda dissapointed. Maybe it's because we haven't had a successful combo deck in a long time but lets break this down.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, Sage of Hours, and Vorel of the Hull Clade /Kalonian Hydra is the one all the chatter has been about. This requires a tap from the counter doubling source, and REQUIRES G/W/U. Ruling out B and R.

Now, let's look at the one I like the best.

Elite Arcanist + Triton Tactics + Sage of Hours with 5 mana open. Every piece has just a single U in it's cost, the combo is mono U so it can be slotted into any pre-existing U/X variant, it also requires a tap from the source of counters.

Obviously I'm biased but why has there been no chatter about the Arcanist version of this combo? It seems cheaper and easier to attain.

I'm sadly not a huge fan about any of these combos. 3 card combos in standard just seem slow. Very cool idea though.

The Johnny in me just died. If your out to have some fun and play some games, thats the combo for you! If you want to be extremely competitive, stick to Mono-B.

-> 3 card combo that doesn't actually win you the game and can be reacted to.

-> In the same meta as Doom Blade , Essence Scatter , Negate . I believe you can also cast Magma Jet in response to activating Elite Arcanist , before the Triton Tactics copy resolves.

I don't much see the point.

There are lots of combos...

The combo piece: Sage of Hours

The +1/+1 counter placer: Ajani, Mentor of Heroes , Forced Adaptation , Elite Arcanist (with a targeting spell or +1/+1 counter placing spell)

Helpful counter doublers: Corpsejack Menace , Vorel of the Hull Clade

There are also other +1/+1 counter placing spells, but you can't go infinite with just them (unless you use Elite Arcanist )

Sounds fun! 4x Dispel protects you from Doom Blade , Essence Scatter and Negate ..

Elite Arcanist + Triton Tactics + one mana dork = infinite storm.

Ajani with Sage of Hours is already a very powerful synergy, albeit fragile. You're basically taking two turns for every one of theirs with one +1/+1 counter left over. Bant is a good color combination with access to a lot of dangerous creatures and some nice disruption.

I do like the idea of throwing in that combo OP mentioned into any U/X deck, but the cards on their own are too weak to see competitive play.

@ChiefBell dies to Doom Blade isn't a good argument in this case because Doom Blade dies to Dissolve . Also, if you go G/U you get Simic Charm which also trumps Doom Blade .

I'm just not a fan of slow, multiple card combos in a format dominated by endless creature removal.

The deck, with all the +1+1 counters, would have a pretty solid beatdown plan if the combo is disrupted. And it runs blue, so "endless creature removal" could be answered by endless counterspells. with Dispel and Negate you have 8 counterspells that cost the same or less than all creature removal.
