Saying good-bye to sphinxes revelation
Standard forum

To all those who dread rotation because of their lack of ability to make children cry and respond to losing by a sphinxs revelation for 16, and winning when there are no cards in your library and elixir was milled. Will all please post incredible moments of victory or just a small word for our friend sphinxs revelation.
Sphinx's Revelation and AEtherling , standard will never be the same without you
RIP

I won't miss a single word on that card. Draw/Go control irritates me on a fundamental level, and I'm glad it's dying (at least for a while).
Having a plan to disrupt your opponent is a good thing. Devoting every card in your deck to making sure they can't play the game at all, however, is a twat move. BOTH players at the table should be able to have a fun and interactive match.

The only reason I didn't hate Rev is because I was playing a deck where life didn't matter, and it helped me take out my opponent's library..

well, all you guys probably hate the card, but I framed my playset on the wall, so...

Sphinx's Revelation
and Supreme Verdict
are responsible for probably the biggest growth I've experienced as a player. I started off playing Grixis Walkers with terrible mana and no way to stabilize, quickly figured out I prefer to be the beatdown and playing aggressive. Switched to Big R/g Devotion and loved it. It was explosive and was crushing all but two decks, MUD and U/W Control. I went undefeated for the first time at FNM with the deck and took it to an IQ. I played 5 U/W decks, ending 1-4 against them. I finished 1-5, was bummed and looking for answers to Verdict. Another guy at my shop was playing G/R Monsters and kept telling me how good his Control match up was. I didn't understand how because we were playing mostly the same deck. I needed to learn how to crush these evil cards.
I net decked for the first time and copied CVM's list. My eyes were opened up by playing the deck and my fundamental understanding of the game altered. From then on out I crushed U/W. After BNG's release, the weekend Esper was supposed to whoop up on Monsters I won my first competitive tournament taking down 3 Esper opponents. I ended up going on a 27 match win streak against U/W/x control in sanctioned play. Thanks for the wins, the prizes that come with those, and the learning experience.

Sphinx can blow me...
Except when I played Plasm Capture or played Notion Thief then it was fun.
"Yo couch, fuck it."

Good bye, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I accept and appreciate the raw power of the archetype, and how it shaped a standard enviornment and archetype for two years. And with that out of the way, I can safely say Sphinx's Revelation go burn in hell.
September 17, 2014 7:33 p.m.
You don't have to say goodbye to it guys. It will most likely see play in modern decks as a 1 or 2 of in UWR. With the new fetches, it will be even easier for players to get a functional modern deck together. Im gunna snag me at least one copy while they are cheap.

Sphinx's Revelation itself is a good card. It's not the cards fault that some twat (thank you NobodyPicksBulbasaur) crammed it into a deck full of counter spells and wraths with a way to recycle it all. Personally I think that deck should have just been banned. No wincon and having to watch Jackson Cunningham lose game one of pro tour to that piece of shit deck was painful. Game two and three were fine because his deck did something besides "counter your shit, gain a fuckton of life and wipe your board". Oh and I draw a buttload of cards.
End rant

Oh, this not saying I'm gonna not play them. I have a casual U/W Control deck (because i am a terrible person) it is a four of in.

Yay, more reasons for people to play Red Deck Wins now!
vomits

I think I'm with gnarlicide on this one. The first time I dropped a Notion Thief and walked home with the fnm was truly vindicating. Since then, it's just been another standard chase card to me. Powerful, format defining, but not without answers. Life is tough, sideboard accordingly.

Lmao some people just hate the rev so much, it's rotating, yet still hilarious
September 18, 2014 3:08 p.m.
My gameplan against Sphinx's Revelation was to keep attacking them
They play rev, draw into Supreme Verdict , I've got Rootborn Defenses ready, gg next turn, simple as that

Bellock86 Violent. The deck clearly wasn't a bad deck, as it won a pro tour and was a force throughout it's entire time in standard. Control is a different sort of archetype, and yes it's gameplan is to restrict you as much as possible while letting them play. And banned? You can play around azorius control, it can be beat and often was. It wasn't ever dominating, and it wasn't an unfair deck.

Sphinx's Revelation I hate you and you best friend Supreme Verdict with every fiber of my being, and when you were in standard it was my seemingly never ending quest to beat you. That being said, I feel that you made me a better player for it. I learned what cards beat you and I learned how to play against you and even though I am a better player for your existence, good riddance and burn in hell.

Dear Sphinx's Revelation ,
Thank you for providing me with challenging matchups so I could become better.
Go to hell.
Love, every non-U/W/X player.

Dalektable - don't get the "violent" part of your comment but i will concede at being a little butt hurt over UW/x control builds in the current standard.
I just hate decks that take the fun out of the game. Games where i sit there getting all my stuff countered while you just draw cards to get more counters is a fun sucking abyss from which there is no return.
My problem with the deck was simply that it required less skill to pilot than most. And Ivan Flock won Pro tour with it in part due to Jackson Cunningham having a pretty rough mana base (IMHO obviously i can't judge too harshly as he was second in a protour and i've never even gotten into the upper levels of a PTQ). But my point stands in that his mana base was not balanced enough to contend with a deck that's strategy was to "play land and if i can't, draw cards then play land, your go" leading up to a giant Rev. At least in game one anyway (i'll come back to the other games later).
I'm not a pro. i don't have that level of skill. And i also recognize that playing high stakes magic 2 days in a row would tax anyone's nerves. I just think that UW/x was stacked to be an oppressive deck that could screw most other decks out of a win unless they could get out in front quick and kill the UW/X player before they got into rev territory. And when you're gauranteed a land drop almost every turn and don't have to do anything except counter the spells your opponent tries to cast that is not easy.
Now for the positive side of my rant that will hopefully make me sound less douchey. I feel that the REAL reason Ivan Flock won PT was not because he played a skill-less deck but because his sideboard tactics were genius against Cunningham. He literally took the deck from straight control to a more tempo beat face deck. I mean come on. The dude swung for the win with a Nyx-Fleece Ram in the attack group for crying out loud. His choices were smart. And at that level it did take smart decisions to win.
If this seemed as an incoherent babble i apologize. i was trying to put all my impressions and thoughts into words and i feel like i may have come across as a rambling idiot. So if anyone is still reading this up to now, thank you for your patience and bearing with me.

I'm gonna have to disagree about the level of skill involved in playing UW/x decks, they're not the easiest to play. Control decks in general are not easy to play, and not easy to play against

Sphinx's and verdict are rotating, they are now easy to buy en-mass for stock-piling once they slowly increase in modern value.
I remember when people were saying that Sphinx's Revelation won't get played. Le fools.

Let the U/W/X players have their Vigil for the Lost . This card has held a special place in their hearts for a long time.
But for the rest of us

Oh ye Revelation of the Sphinx, you were a good card. A great card. A powerful card. Oh how us controllers will remember the controllings, and our internal cacklings at said controllings. Standard will be a different beast this season. Fear the fall.
