So the first major tournament of the season is in the books now, and I'm wondering what it all means ...
There were 5 Mardu Vehicle decks in the Top 8, but I'm not sure that really means anything. Folks had only a couple days to test since the Felidar Guardian ban, so it makes sense lots of people decided to play a strong tuned deck they already knew how to pilot vs. a potentially strong but untuned deck they were not as familiar with.
To figure out what decks are going to rock the world moving forward, I like looking at the Day 2 metagame percentage vs. Top 32 results:
Overperformers:
- Mardu Vehicles: 24% of Day 2 metagame → 34% of Top 32 (incl Top 8)
- Temur Aetherworks: 3% → 9%
- B/W Zombies: 1% → 3%
- Mono-Black Aggro: 1% → 3% (incl Top 8)
- Mono-Black Zombies: 1% → 3%
- U/R Thermo-Alchemist: 1% → 3%
Performed about as expected:
- Jeskai Control: 5% of Day 2 metagame → 6% of Top 32
- B/G Energy: 3% → 3%
- G/R Energy: 3% → 3%
- Sultai Control: 3% → 3%
- U/R Emerge: 3% → 3%
- W/R Humans: 3% → 3% (incl Top 8)
- B/G Delirium: 12% → 13% (incl Top 8)
Underperformed a little (but still made Top 32):
- G/B Aggro: 4% of Day 2 metagame → 3% of Top 32
- G/W Tokens: 5% → 3%
- U/R Control: 6% → 3%
Underperformed (though hard to say for sure, since the sample size is pretty small):
- B/R Eldrazi: 3% of Day 2 metagame → 0 decks in Top 32
- Bant Aetherworks: 3% → 0
- G/R Monsters: 3% → 0
- Sultai Delirium: 3% → 0
Your thoughts?
I agree with the default to Mardu Vehicles due to the proximity of the ban, it's rather doubtful they'll hold that dominance.
Looking at the rest of the list it tells me that this format is in no way solved and there's a lot of potential here.

Nice stat breakdown. I was actually doing a little calculating of some of these myself yesterday.
I also agree with your sentiment that a lot of people just defaulted to Mardu Vehicles with the ban being so close to the tournament. Players didn't have a lot of time to reliably build something new. Even so, seeing 24% of Day 2 and 34% of Top 32 is a lot better than 50% or more.
At the very least, there seems to be a nice distribution among decks that AREN'T Mardu Vehicles. Nice to see some variety in there.
