Set Legality

Standard forum

Quick and easy question and I think this is the proper place to place it...

What sets will be legal when Journey is released and becomes standard?

GoofyFoot says... #2

Everything that currently is. Return to ravnica, gatecrash, dragon's maze, m14, theros, born of the gods, journey into nyx

The Ravnica Block rotates out after M15, right?

Really? Damn. I keep waiting for the Ravnica block to leave! I hate the set in standard and will relish the day it is removed!

Personally I refuse to join back into standard while Rav block is still legit.

there is always two blocks in standard, but during the summer, once m15 comes out, there will also be two core sets. then once september hits, rtr and m14 will rotate out and it will be theros block, m15, and "huey"

Return to ravnica is amazing... Theros block sucks lol

xlaleclx says... #7

It's the #1 selling set of all time for a reason

Yeah Theros block sucks royally (for Standard) but honestly there is not a single deck in Standard I want to play solely because UWx Control is SOOOO not fun to play against. I would much rather get beat down off of mass rat tokens or RG monsters than UWx controlled to death.

April 9, 2014 2:48 a.m.

I respect the Ravnica set, and I really dig it's ideas and some of it's cards... but HOLY GODDAMN JESUS I'm tired of it...

Can't wait for it to leave standard.

There's just something about the phrase "holy goddamn jesus" that feels silly to me. It's like it's an oxymoron or something lol.

On the topic, though, I think RTR block has been amazing and has been a wonderful ride to say the least. But I do grow tiresome of it's archetypes. Or at least tired of it's main spells in those archetypes. Par for the course, really though, right?

April 9, 2014 3:03 a.m.

-MisterJ- says... #12

Is that like a double negative?

April 9, 2014 3:03 a.m.

-MisterJ- says... #13

I tired of RTR for the same reason I tired of Modern. Control is just NO fun to play against really.

April 9, 2014 3:04 a.m.

xlaleclx says... #14

There's not very much control in modern.

April 9, 2014 3:05 a.m.

-MisterJ- says... #15

Really? Because my meta has two completely different America control decks that circulate and are ridiculously good.

April 9, 2014 3:10 a.m.

xlaleclx says... #16

UWR control is the only real viable control deck and it's not that great at the moment.

April 9, 2014 3:25 a.m.

xlaleclx says... #17

You quit modern because there are two guys in your meta with control decks?...

April 9, 2014 3:25 a.m.

-MisterJ- says... #18

No I said two decks. Each deck has has two people running it, so we have a total of 4 america control players. Not including the other brew control decks.

Between them and the two Tron decks that play regularly that is the majority of my local meta and honestly sucks to play against. Other than those six players we have me playing combo or mill, one meliri pod, two soul sisters, one zoo, one home brew control, one fairy, one white weenie, and two RDW that make up the usual play group.

4 players with solid control, 1 brew control that is still really good. 5 control decks. That leaves 7 other deck types to go up against besides mine. Meaning over 1/3 of the people at my LGS playing control.

So no thanks. I'm good.

There's never a wrong thread for the scryfish.

Even when Detention Sphere , Sphinx's Revelation , Supreme Verdict , etc all rotate out of Standard a new control list will be found once the metagame settles in. There's really only that first few weeks after rotation where you'll see almost none of them. While you might hate it, enough folks enjoy playing control that it will always get built. It might not be as grindy as the current UWx lists, but RTR rotation isn't going to be the saving grace you might think it will be.

April 9, 2014 9:51 a.m.

@TheAmazingSalsa: Nothing rotates until September/October, when the first set of the new block is released.

You mean Patrick?

April 9, 2014 10:13 a.m.

@Epochalyptik: Oh, thanks! Guess I'm stuck with RTR for a while ahaha

ChiefBell says... #26

So 1/3 of your local meta plays control? That's perfect. If a 1/3 played aggro and a 1/3 played combo then the rock, paper, scissors aspect of magic would be fullfilled. At any one time you hope to have that kind of representation - it's about right.

The ravnica set is absolutely amazing and was a brewers paradise. Theros is boring and straightforward. Thank god that nothing rotates until next fall. We'll have to see what the next set brings!

April 9, 2014 12:13 p.m.

@ChiefBell: Yes, the RTR block has some amazing features, and I personally like the idea of the guilds and the history behind all of those. But, to me, it got old quickly, specially when we already had a similar set (if not, the same) a while ago, and, to me, it got back too quickly.

April 9, 2014 12:23 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #28

What do you mean similar sets? The shards set was 4 blocks before it and the original ravnica was 7 blocks before. I can't think of much else that's similar?

April 9, 2014 12:35 p.m.

-MisterJ- says... #29

Umm well over 1/3 almost 1/2 but if i need to actually pull out a true fraction i will
