With cards like Hypersonic Dragon , Alchemist's Refuge , and now Quicken , what sorcery cards benefit from being at instant speed?

Thank you for reading!

The short answer is all of them.

Well, not with Hypersonic Dragon but with the others things you mentioned Supreme Verdict on an opponent's attack step (or end step is even better) is quite good.

IF you can pull it off (hard to do with color combination) you could use Appetite for Brains just after an opponent uses Sphinx's Revelation to make sure they don't have an AEtherling in their hand now :)

Some examples though would be:
Demonic Tutor during your opponents end step
Armegeddon during their upkeep
Supreme Verdict during the attack phase

Think twice into a miracle card and do it on their end step

Rhadamanthus says... #6

@capriom85: That always works. Miracle gives you special permission to cast the spell during the resolution of the triggered ability. This can happen during any step or phase of any turn (note that it's most often happening during your draw step, a time when you're usually not able to cast sorceries).

Armed / Dangerous if Hypersonic Dragon doesnt gets blocked would be nice just the armed part

Flames of the Firebrand as response to an attack

Mizzium Mortars

Act of Treason and block your opponents creature with your opponents creature is a win-win situation

Myogenesis says... #9

@Ruric - that would be funny but I'm pretty sure Quicken has to fully resolve before Index is cast at instant speed, meaning you would draw a card from Quicken before Index resolves.

Ruric says... #10

@Myogenesis im sorry but i didnt meant to do it at the same time or in response, you can simply fix your next draw so you can ensure the miracle happens on the next turn

Ahh true, wasn't even thinking. Good call!

Nymbie says... #12

It's true, all of your answers benefit from being at instant speed in that it preserves your mana pool until the last possible second, like doing things in end step and what not. But is there any cards that specifically explode when casted at instant speed? Like a Phytoburst as a combat trick, or anything else?

I like Act of Treason and Index though Ruric, never thought of that. :)

Ruric says... #13

@Nymbie i liked that but i liked more the Armed / Dangerous if Hypersonic Dragon doesnt gets blocked would be nice just the armed part

because double strike is so strong combat ability it is usually on sorceries

Ruric says... #14

now you got me thinking on making a miracle deck wit this trick

Hypersonic Dragon

Index

and a bunch of miracle cards

You know, it's really odd that Hypersonic Dragon doesn't see any love

August 9, 2013 3:22 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #16

Yeah, with Haste he doesn't fall into the "no impact when you play him" category so it's really weird to see the complete lack of play.

PotatoPi says... #17

Cipher cards like Hidden Strings are fun at instant speed.

August 9, 2013 3:41 p.m.

Ruric says... #18

im planning to make a deck with him for standard its R/U Flying

August 9, 2013 3:46 p.m.

beakedbard says... #19

He mainly doesn't see any love because Thundermaw Hellkite is still around and most decks he's in mainly use instances over sorcs anyway. He's by no means a bad card though I always run him in the sideboard of my Izzet deck and he's paid off quite a few times.

harrydemon117 says... #20

I could see Hypersonic Dragon decks pairing well with something like Prey Upon

August 12, 2013 9:24 a.m.

Nymbie says... #21

@harrydemon117, you can always just Pit Fight for one more colorless mana

August 12, 2013 12:43 p.m.

harrydemon117 says... #22

Okay Nymbie you got me I concede that one.

Dallie says... #23

Any spell that will affect the game more so at instant than at sorcery speed. Combat tricks-ish cards (Phytoburst ) and disruption tools (removal, discard, etc) will benefit the most, I would say.

But as previously mentioned. Any sorcery spell I can think of, is better at instant speed.

August 13, 2013 8:55 a.m.

I can see it being used in esper control decks to Supreme Verdict during their endstep in order to not nuke your own Obzedat, Ghost Council .

Cyber Locc says... #25

I wonder could duress be used as a counter like that I'm guessing no but maybe. That would be awesome ''I cast supreme verdict" umm in response discard it

August 13, 2013 3:22 p.m.

SharuumNyan says... #26

Lingering Souls , and then flash it back for four 1/1 flying blockers in a crunch.

August 13, 2013 3:32 p.m.

Dallie says... #27

@Cyber Locc: It doesn't work like that. Say your opponent casts Supreme Verdict (or any other spell for that matter). By the time you receive priority to cast Duress , the verdict is no longer in your opponents hand, and thus you can't select it as the target of Duress .

You can't even do it when you see your opponent tap mana, since mana abilities can't be responded to.

harrydemon117 says... #28

Pillar of Flame at instant speed FTW!

August 13, 2013 4:03 p.m.

Dallie says... #29

harrydemon117: Wouldn't do much against a Voice! :p 'cept you could of course always cast it on your turn.

August 13, 2013 4:06 p.m.

Cyber Locc says... #30

Ya I know I thought about it more after the comment had a brain fart and forgot that the stack is a zone. But that is why I said I don't think you can but just imagine if you could lol. What you can do is cast duress during there upkeep then giving access to the card they just drew however.

August 13, 2013 4:19 p.m.

Dallie says... #31

True, unless it's a land or creature card :P Mind Rot would also work well.

August 13, 2013 4:22 p.m.

harrydemon117 says... #32

Well obviously I would cast it at sorcery speed against a Voice of Resurgence lol.

Even better would be Dreadbore . Grixis can have a finisher AND a good instant speed removal for 2 CMC that targets ANY creature while Hypersonic Dragon is out

Nymbie comment #11 .. Act of Treason , Index i really am thinking about the act of treason in my izzet deck (discused below with potatoepi)

Ruric comment # 13 .. Hypersonic Dragon Index ... i was just lookin at hyper/index combo yesterday....

PotatoPi ... i just paired (tripled i guess now) Hidden Strings Quicken and Invisible Stalker ... but added Nivmagus Elemental and Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer and/or Talrand, Sky Summoner to the mix...

IF JUST AN UN-CIPHERED INVISIBLE STALKER (guaranteed hit) or NIVMAGUS ELEMENTAL (appears to be unblocked) taps and ATTACKS...

Quicken Hidden Strings THERE IS POTENTIALLLY 3 SPELLS CAST FOR THE COST OF 1 blue mana +6 damage/gutter AND +3 1/1 Elementals/young pyro AND/OR +3 flying 2/2 drakes AND draw a card............AND/OR if you can afford BLUE and BLUE mana CMC ... untap 1 "permenent" (Island) when you originally casted Hidden Strings and UN-TAP the ATTACKING Nivmagus Elemental and "EXILE" the second CIPHERED strings.. (ONLY SECOND CAN BE EXCILED) ..... now you have an untapped 3/4 that hits for 1 damage this turn.. but blocks bigger next turn..... and 6 damage and 2 elementals......... etc.

Heres my deck idea... any help here? Unblockable Pain Take #2 (lookin 4 help)

And to answer the original post... FLASH CIPHERS.... Nymbie

with sorcery at instant speed, could one cast a Lightning Bolt at someone, then instant Worldfire on the stack to do the worldfire resolves then lightning bolt and a kill?

November 24, 2013 11:13 p.m.

Dallie says... #35

@asasinater13: Yes, that would be possible.

As the stack resolves by LIFO (Last In First Out), the Lightning Bolt would still be on the stack, when you cast Worldfire . The stack would look like this:

Worldfire

Lightning Bolt

And resolve from top to bottom (LIFO). Thus exiling all permanents, all cards from all hands and graveyards, and setting each player's life total at 1, and then when the Lightning Bolt resolves it'll deal 3 damage to your opponent, dealing lethal damage to him/her.

It's kind of a necro bump though.

asasinater13 says... #36

Thanks for explaining that, I thought that would be how it works but I'm not the most well-versed in how the stack resolves.
