Standard Bans

Hello everyone,

In case you haven't heard, both Agent of Treachery and Fires of Invention are banned in Standard and Historic.

Companion has also changed in every format: Once per game, any time you could cast a sorcery (during your main phase when the stack is empty), you can pay 3 generic mana to put your companion from your sideboard into your hand. This is a special action, not an activated ability.

Thoughts?

I honestly disagree TypicalTimmy. I find the ruling change to be acceptable. It is easier to plan and interact with the companion, plus their power-level has taken a hit. The decks that like to hit them on curve will no longer be able to. I can see where you are coming from since it is still essentially an 8 card hand. In my opinion this will end up going 1 of 2 ways: 1) Companions remain highly prevalent and powerful. 2) The severely decrease in popularity and aren't seen nearly as often.

We will see what happens though, I'm curious to see how the meta will change.

I agree with TypicalTimmy , I think companion still has basically no drawback and there is no reason to stop playing them, also they are still very good ebcasue tehre is less hand desruption in STD

I want to play all the decks they become next to unplayable in the eternal formats tho and I think that's where the bigger issue was

I_Want_To_PlayAllTheDecks "basically no drawback"? The drawback is written on the card. I thought companion was ok before the rules change, but I don't play outside my playgroup and none has companions. No cards over 2 cmc in your deck and 6 total mana for that cat thing? The cmc restriction seems like a real drawback, and 6 mana to give you the ability to cast something from you GY each turn.. seems fair. Sun titan does this and targets cmc 3.. into play.. Altho he is not guaranteed in your hand..

I'm just really rankled by the fact that these printed cards had to be literally changed so fast. We all know the sting of errata (cough cough, Hostage Taker) but to literally change how an entire ability functions is a kind of far-reaching we haven't seen before. Yes, things like the legend rule and combat damage using the stack have changed, but those weren't printed on every card they applied to. Every card with companion has reminder text that is no longer entirely accurate. Furthermore, those are both things that only changed after many years - this took about a month. What is going on at Wizards??

Lets not forget the greatest errata ever on Hostage Taker which needed to be changed before the set because it caused a draw if played without a valid target other than itself.
