Not even kidding. Tallied my own numbers on this from 30 standard matches.
- 33% of all my matches lead with Scorch Spitter
- 40% of my matches play Ajani’s Pridemate in the first 3 turns
- 17% of my matches play Risen Reef in the first 3 turns
I love MTG (Arena, specifically), but I’m so glad I decided a year ago that I’ll never spend another cent on this game, outside pre-releases. I could enjoy this game significantly more if, for NINETY-PERCENT of matches, didn’t cycle between three decks.

Imo, the reason you’re seeing the same few decks is because you’re ONLY playing on arena. MTGO has a slightly more diverse meta game, as does paper magic. My LGS contains a huge variety of decks (usually 25- 35 players) that play the decks you play against but also many of the decks you see here; https://www.mtgtop8.com/format?f=ST
I’m sorry you’re frustrated. I get frustrated a lot with MTG. I really only spend money on MTGO for the vintage draft and various things like that.

The way Arena is monitized leads to a rather stale meta. Decks like White lifegain weenies rely heavily on commons and uncommons, making it relatively easy to build a fairly competitive deck without making any purchases.
The other major problem with Arena is, in my experience, the overwhelming number of players who start stalling once they begin to lose, hoping to force the winning player to rage-quit. I can put up with several games in a row of very similar decks; I can't continue to play on a system where slow play goes effectively unpunished.
As Daveslab2022 indicated, most of Arena's problems stem from Arena, not Standard. Standard can still be rather fun and diverse in Paper, seeing as budget players can get and build with bulk rares.

I play MTG Arena. The only decks I have that I regularly play are 5 mono color decks, because it is the easiest to complete quests. I have been having fun with historic lately.
If you want diverse gameplay from arena, you either have to climb higher up the ranks of constructed; or play a different format like historic or limited.u
For a game of Magic where you do not spend a cent, it is still pretty good.

You'll always get similarities in Standard due to the limited card pool. Branch out into Pioneer or Modern. Sure you'll have to spend some money, but once you have a deck you can play it without too much worry about rotation.

The Compromiser exclusively plays pioneer and modern for this reason. If thy wishes to use tomes that are in standard, the Compromiser recommends drafting because it never becomes stale like a dried Necroskitter scrotum.
