Standard is losing grasp?

Ive seen more and more shops recently switching from Standard FNM to Modern FNM, and this trend really exploded whith the announcment of the block printing change.

I can hardly find a place where i can do Standard FNM in my area now. Is this just a local thing going on or you guys experience it too?

Mine does monday something (cant remember name) draft where they draft additional packs each week and have a continuous draft pool of cards, standard Wednesdays, fnm, and Friday draft. Another store I go to does fnm and Thursday draft.

I have heard of 1 modern tournament scheduled at my store, but that is in order to qualify for a modern masters draft later on.

Standard is still the most played format in Magic. It's probably just your local area.

I wish I was in your shoes...everyone in my area plays Standard and I wish we had more Modern and Legacy events.

Mine does alternating FNM of Draft-Standard-Draft-Modern repeat.
They also do EDH on Sunday, followed by Modern when EDH is done.
Soon we will be doing a Wednesday Standard as well.
There's also an open game day on Saturdays for anyone to come in and play whatever they like... free but no prizes... sort of an opportunity to play test your decks and have casual fun.

I'm thinking of hosting a Sealed every other week or once a month, depending on player turnout.

I need to find out the formats that the shops in my area do. I've been out of the magic scene recently because of rotation/funds. As much as I would like to continue playing Standard, I can't afford the constant rotation. I'll probably just invest in a solid Modern deck and just play that for a while.

i have two places with 10 miles from my house. The bigger store does commander on mondays, draft & standard(fnm) on friday. They refuse to even try to do anything with modern because it doesn't "appeal" to thier players. The smaller store was running strickly modern, but started alternating because thats what the players wanted.

So get atleast 7 people to start bugging the workers/owner of your lgs. If you have any friends that go with you, go a little early, and bring some modern decks. Instead of trying to trade, play, and draw attention to your game(s).

Probably just local to your area, perhaps. I just lived in NYC and move to FL and Standard FNMs abound in both at present. Modern Mondays happen at a lot of places, too.

Standard seems strong now, but your concerns about the continued popularity of the format are justified. A ton of players make a short-term switch to a Modern focus in the weeks before and after rotation. Many get jaded because they lose many of their cards in the the format they're used to playing. Some players realize that there's far better long-term value in building Modern decks, as cards only rotate out when entered into a Banned list, which is relatively rare. Rotation makes a lot of folks consider Eternal formats, which is totally fair. To be frank, I consider myself such a player at the moment. Not that I hate Standard at all, however. I think we will see a surge in the popularity of Modern and EDH in the coming months, and this is normal for Fall rotations. The trends kind of stabilize, especially after the Standard metagame materializes into something relatively solid. I think WotC is cognizant of the growing popularity of Modern, though. Hence the Modern Masters set. There's also their decision to support EDH with yearly products, apparently from this point forward. So to conclude, some interesting things are happening as far as format preference goes among the player community.

Standard Friday and Thursday.

My main shop only does drafts for FNM, with Standard events on Wednesday. The other shop in my are does Standard events for FNM but they always have a very low turnout (~8 players). I really wish I could play in the 32 person Standard events that I'm used to for FNM :/
