Standard sleepers?

What are some not so hot standard cards you guys think might play a role in some future decks after Fate Reforged is released? I'm thinking maybe some of the cards with Outlast could see play. Two that I've been really surprised hasn't found a good home are Purphoros, God of the Forge and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. Purphoros seems huge in a token deck and I know it's been tinkered with but has anyone REALLY tried to play him? And Ashiok is fairly cheap to cast, can put a damper on the Delve ability to a point and stealing your opponents Siege Rhino or Wingmate Roc...how isn't she a more popular choice?

If Eldrazi make an appearance in FTR, there's the potential to drop TWO of them in one turn with this thing...

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver Was used a bunch in Worlds, variations of Sidisi-Whip.

Yeah Ashiok is seeing a bunch of play in various BUG decks. It's almost as if you have no idea what you're talking about.

Warden is super good. Between Banishing Light, Suspension Field and Erase, there's almost never a time that it isnt just a 4/4 for 3. I've played with him already, and if white can get at least one more good midrangy creature, i'm sure this thing will do work.

I feel like if Highspire Mantis was in any other set he might see some play. But right now if you're R/W, you're likely either Mardu or Jeskai. Running those clans get you Butcher of the Horde or Mantis Rider respectively, which are just better for equal or lesser CMC.
I think Winterflame is another victim of the set it appears in. Its a really good tempo spell, but gets lost in the sea of great 3-mana cards we have now.
See the Unwritten could definitely make an appearance. Putting 2 creatures into play with one card is really good.
Trap Essence is one that I think is on the borderline. It is almost exactly what these colors want to do, I just think in this case it would be much better if it countered non-creature spells instead of creatures.

I haven't been looking at the deck lists, but Life's Legacy, mainly because I want it played.
I also wish it was an instant. WHY AREN'T YOU AN INSTANT!? I can deal with one or two more cmc, but BE AN INSTANT!!!
December 25, 2014 1:51 a.m.
Honestly! I'd play it if I was allowed to cast it in response to a Downfall...

I can also deal with half the card draw of the toughness of said creature, rounded down.
December 25, 2014 2:05 a.m.
Rounded up might be fine, so you at least can get value out of Elvish Mystic. I hate cards that don't help you when you're behind (since if you don't have something with 2 toughness, you're screwed)

Femme_Fatale says... #17
Nah that'd be too op. At 2 it'd have to be rounded down. 3 mana, rounded up. 4 mana, not rounded at all.
December 25, 2014 2:16 a.m.
Yeah true, at instant speed it'd be too strong at 2. Add something similar it to your set that you're building so when you work for WOTC I can use it for real xD

Devouring Light Convoke doesn't care about summoning sickness. In a format with currently overpriced removal how is a spell that can be cast for free not seeing any play :/
I use it in my Selesnya Aggro rogue build along with Brimaz, King of Oreskos
December 26, 2014 12:17 a.m.
It doesn't work super well because if they have a utility creature that has annoying effects but it never attacks or blocks, you can't remove it. But that's just what I suppose the reason is, I would probably play it if I was running white
December 26, 2014 3:12 a.m.
Ornithopter. With Ugin being colorless and mentioning creatures color in his c ability's.

I probably should mention that Purphoros, God of the Forge sees quite a lot of play in token builds and is superb in my Edge and Scale, Bring Forth the Victory. Because even if the deck's hated enemy, BG(x) whip decides to remove my creatures, I'm still doing damage to him via Purphoros, God of the Forge.

I was brainstorming this... I don't own the "standard" portion of the mana base so I never tested it like I should have.
Mardu-u-du? [Tokens Help Wanted] ...but in turn it spawned this 2nd Rate Tokens

Is there any potential at all in Jalira, Master Polymorphist? I've been using her in a control shell with the one and only backbreaking Stormtide Leviathan, but I find it almost always better to wait and just hardcast the Leviathan.
It seems a shame, since Polymorph is both fun and powerful, but Jalira seems to have turned out useless. Am I just chasing a dream that'll never fructify, or can you see any way at all she becomes playable? Hoping against hope here!

Femme_Fatale says... #25
It is fruitless tbh. I mean, if that is your win condition, you have to protect her being cast, so that is 1-2 spells meaning about 11 mana. Then you have to protect her ability. the creature she is supposed to sac, AND protect the Stormtide Leviathan. It is why Pearl Lake Ancient is used, it has flash so you can flash it in EOT when they've tapped out, or flash it in when they attack. It also has a relatively no-cost protection for a control deck who should be having 12 lands on the field anyways.
Jalira, Master Polymorphist is kind of jank anyways. She's only good in EDH, because she costs far too much to use to just get a nonlegendary creature.

I guess so. I find that sad, but oh well. I mean, I knew she was jank, but I liked the card.
Thanks!

Boon Satyr is my pick for this spot. Still not talked about by most or used as often as it should be in builds as being a good card.I have into decks playing both of the mentioned in the opening at FNMs. I expect to see more decks running cards like See the Unwritten and Interpret the Signs though with cards like treasure cruise and dig through time the later might never see play.

idk if i just havent seen it played but uhm War-Name Aspirant is pretty amazing in any red aggro deck that wants to get past chump blocks. and I want Mardu Skullhunter to be played in an aggro waste not deck.
December 28, 2014 3:45 a.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #30
War-Name Aspirant doesn't work because it requires you to attack, so against midrange and control you are screwed. It is also only good early game when you have the fuel to attack. The same with Mardu Skullhunter and raid in general. Raid is a nice concept, but delve is probably the best in standard. Prowess number 2, outlast number 3, ferocious number 4. And raid, last.
December 28, 2014 1:56 p.m.
I'd argue that Ferocious is better than Outlast. I haven't seen a single person play outlast because it's just so slow, but I see See the Unwritten all the time. Outlast might be cool, but not as it stands right now
December 28, 2014 2:02 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #32
I see outlast more than I see ferocious >.>
But I agree on those points. If outlast costed a little more, and was an instant, it'd be hella competitive.

Trail of Mystery is going to be bulk rare to at leeeeeast $1 rare if not more. Manifest and Morphs will be prevalent in Fate Reforged that this card will see a slight if not big spike demand. Same goes with Hardened Scales and as some of you guys said See the Unwritten. I hoarded up 30 trails, and 20 see the unwrittens ready to unload it when it goes up.

I finished off my playset of See the Unwritten and Ghostfire Blade the other day.
High Sentinels of Arashin is another one I like.

Deflecting Palm is sideboard material against control and heroic. It won't be mainboard playable.
December 31, 2014 5:48 p.m.
I play Deflecting Palm main board. I was playing the other day and my buddy tried to swing with his Butcher of the Horde, I flashed in Dictate of the Twin Gods then Deflecting Palm the damage from the butcher. 20 straight to him.

The thing about standard now is that you can modify a fairly decent decklist to include basically anything. There aren't any "super" sleepers that could boss standard right now, the pros and the sellers have everything noticeable pinned down.
January 2, 2015 7:48 p.m.
Purphoros, God of the Forge is awesome in my Mardu Sacrificial Tokens. 4 mana is a bit steep but when he is out and I am blasting Hordeling Outburst for six damage it feels pretty damn good.

Dakra Mystic. This card is amazing. It is extremely good card draw. I used it in this deck. Giant scissors of DOOM

This should go into the "Standard" forum because it is about the standard format, not about spoilers or speculation. Epochalyptik can move this. That being said, this format is constantly morphing, new decks almost every week. we are starting to find out which decks are the best, but it is by no means the last iteration of these decks. Ashiok sees play mostly in U/B control lists. the reason he doesn't see play is mostly because of his colors. No one really wants to play u/b right now. Also, id be very surprised if outlast got played competitively. It is slow, requires you to tap down your creatures, and takes up most, if not all of your turns
