Supreme Verdict; not so airtight.

i was at a standard tournament yesterday, up against a naya-aggro deck, and i had an esper control deck. turn 4, he had me down to 6 with a 2/2 boar, a voice, and a Soldier of the Pantheon , i tapped out for a Supreme Verdict , he responded with a Boros Charm , making his permanents indestructible, so i payed 4 mana to kill my own Omenspeaker . faith in control decks lost.

Yeah, there are a number of options against it. Boros Charm , Rootborn Defenses , Ready / Willing , Golgari Charm , Mending Touch .

I personally use Mending Touch in my Bant Hexproof deck, as its cheap and I rarely have more than 1 creature I want to save.

I think you need to be a little more mindful of what cards complement certain deck types. A Naya aggro deck that isn't running Boros Charm is dead in the water vs. control for the very reason you described, plus it has the ability to give double strike or 4 to the face; why wouldn't this card be run? I would assume it's somewhat of an autoinclude, at least in the side, and work to play around it with more 2 cost removal.

thanks, i should maybe put in hand destruction? like maybe 3 Thoughtseize s because that seems like the only logical way around it. either that or leave 7 mana open for a Dissolve

i guess what threw me off was when i Thoughtseize d him on turn 1 to get rid of his Fabled Hero he didnt have any Boros Charm s and then he drew 2, and used 1 during combat

Sounds like good luck for him.

Maybe consider some kill effects that don't rely on "destroy"? I have always enjoyed sacrifice effects; I guess it's the sadism about your opponent choosing which of his/her creatures will die.

@Dallie the sadism is what does it more me. Some good options are Devour Flesh and Far / Away

Well, if it makes you feel better, mono-red players really don't have anything against it. I hate playing against Esper control because even though there are plenty of options available for siding against it, the deck is just too good. And I play primarily aggro, so if I can't get enough damage in before a Verdict, I'm screwed. And if I dump my hand and get Verdicted, I'm screwed. It's not completely my deck that sucks against it, just my strategy. And every game against it is always the same, and it's so bland...

'Murican.

I love having access to turn 3 Anger of the Gods , and turn 4 verdict, and turn and burn, and mizzium mortars.

boros charm is one of those cards you can't ignore and should expect if they leave the mana up, aggro decks always have cards they can play so if they dont tap out expect instants, but likewise if he didnt have it, chances are you wouldve easily won the rest of the game

Honestly, if you see two mana open in a Boros deck as a control player, you should be assuming they have Boros Charm in their hand. That card is such a core part of the naya strategy.

You should have probably used more spot removal in that situation if he was leaving the mana for Boros Charm so that you could bait the charm out and then Verdict.

With Terminus out of standard, you can no longer rely on boardwipes. If you want to win tournaments with control, just get a playset of Thoughtseize , The Answer to Everything.

DemonicTrilogy yeah i didnt really have a choice, it wouldve ended next turn anyways, he had a Voice of Resurgence in play, i had no board situation, and he already drew 2 since turn 1, and i hadnt really expected that.

When you play control you constantly walk on the edge of the knife and a single misplay is the difference between life and death. It happens.
