The UR Mill Mirror...

Standard forum

Hey guys,

So I wanted to have some fun in standard before rotation comes along, so I threw together the UR Mill Sphinx's Tutelage deck from the PT. Unfortunately, i'm not the only person that's done this.

So with the deck attacking on such a strange axis, what do you guys think the answer is to this deck? Also, what can this deck pack to help combat itself?

I've thought about Cranial Archive, but it's super janky and I don't like it. Currently my plan is Disperse and Negate for the enchantment, then get in there somehow? I don't know. What do yo think?

Thanks.

Well cranial archive really is the only viable graveyard shuffle in standard right now. I guess Day's Undoing is good too but then it does not help at all in the mirror.

Annul is better than Negate for the enchantment but pretty bad for counterspell wars.

The only way to deal with the enchantment once it's resolved through U/R is with Kiora's Dismissal... So yeah, I'd say the awkwardness of the mirror is due to poor design from WOTC. We will probably get better cards in BFZ. Perilous Vault and Ugin are too high cost to be winnable in a counterspell war.

On a final note, if you splash white and go jeskai there are many enchantment removal.

Since Sphinx's Tutelage says 'target player', just slap on an Orbs of Warding and you're good to go

Also funny story: Previous gameday there's a guy in my LGS that play UR Tutelage vs Monoblack aggro. The monoblack aggro, which lost game 1, ended up including all his sideboard except the removal in game 2, therefore he play with a deck of 67-68 cards if I recall.

And he ended up winning with a swarm of Erebos's Titan

Learn from the Past Exists. I'd see it as a legit sideboard option of my store was swarmed by the mill deck.

Learn from the Past is too slow for what it does... the Tutelage player doesn't really care if you shuffle your graveyard once Tutelage gets going with cruise and tormenting voice its 10-15 cards a turn!

Orbs of warding is an interesting choice but trying to resolve a 5 mana spell in a control mirror is hardly done before 10 mana, at that point Tutelage might already be on the board and winning the game. I do think however that might be the only viable option in the mirror for now. Awwwwwwkward.

So fun fact, there's like 4 counterspells in the deck, and they're all in the sideboard. The deck isn't a control deck, it just draws cards, wipes the board, and mills. That said, I think that LftP is fine, but just as clunky as the archive because of how hard it is to draw and cast before being milled over. I'll jam one of each in the board though and see how it does.

With all the new eldrazi coming, you shouldn't have to worry about being milled anymore, just put one in your deck. It can double as a finisher if the mill plan doesn't work too.

I wouldn't depend on the eldrazi that are coming in to have that effect though. Also, this thread is moreso for the next two months before rotation.
