The Worst Card(s) in Standard

Standard forum

Whats the worst most Jankest card in Standard? It could be that one you hate to pull in a pack or a card that just simply sucks. My vote goes to Fleshmad Steed . Unless they bring back "untapping" triggers/abilities, that card is utter crap.

Armored Cancrix , it's a joke

@meecht:

What are you talking about? Sorcery speed land/color changing is awesome. Especially with the cypher. I hope nobody plays that against me, I'll just concede. It totally ruins Mistcutter Hydra .

MindAblaze says... #6

If a card is only useful in certain niche circumstances it's not good. It hardly "totally ruins Mistcutter Hydra " although it does protect it from the non-overloaded Cyclonic Rift .

I'm sure this was known in the sarcasm, but trait doctoring couldn't even hit the hydra cuz of the protection it has in the first place lol. Took me longer to realize that than it should have xDBut yeah, I'd go for Trait Doctoring That or Flamecast Wheel . Hate seeing that in an uncommon slot especially when drafting.

See creatures and such no matter how inefficient can still block, attack and deal damage.

For purest form of jank, you need to go deep for cards like Search the City . It's inefficient at a 5 drop, doesn't effect the battlefield, takes turns of setting up, can brick and your big pay off for all this work is only an extra turn. Heck, Door to Nothingness is easier to implement.

January 10, 2014 2:42 p.m.

Blizzicane says... #16

Search the City for sure for reasons said by Slycne. I remember when my friend pull one and saw it he promptly rip it up on the spot in frustration of it taking up a rare slot in his pack. XD

raggedy ass Sip of Hemlock like i mentioned in an earlier post as soon as i open a booster and see that card i know the rest of the stack is going to be for shit.

Sip of Hemlock is actually fine in draft where you'll take any removal you can get.

I have never played a draft. Maybe one day when the LGS is having one when i am home rather than out here in the land of sand.

I don't know why you guys are hating on Search the City it is an auto include for every EDH deck that runs blue.

An equipment with Untap, 1B:Destroy target creature would make Fleshmad Steed awesome.

sylvannos says... #28

Fleshmad Steed doesn't really have a drawback. What's your opponent going to do? Sacrifice a creature and tap down all of your horsies? Congrats, you now have a two drop Desecration Demon . The card was designed with Limited in mind, where bears (2/2s for two mana) are highly sought after.

Gidgetimer says... #30

The problem with Fleshmad Steed is it says" whenever another creature dies" not "when a creature an opponent controls dies" so your boardstate is 2 steeds and another creature? Remove the other creature, free taps on the steeds. Whats that you have Abhorrent Overlord and some steeds? Might as well sac the steeds first since they are never staying untapped. Grizzly Bears are fine, hate bears are better. Worse bears are well worse.

Firedrinker Satyr - expensive firebreathing that hurts me? Nice.

Oh, so if it becomes midgame and I block with it, I lose? Good.

hungerwolf

Firedrinker is a RDW staple in standard right now and when next rotation comes around his price will probably jump so he is definitely not the worse card in standard.

January 11, 2014 1:36 p.m.

Grimgrinner says... #36

Firemind's Foresight is ok in certain EDH decks. If i'm running grixis control I can use it to tutor up 3 different counterspells; Dissolve , Counterspell , and Swan Song .

Totally Lost can be a great stall in draft actually. Not as a 4-of, but 1-2 in a control deck is actually not bad. Hey nice Assemble the Legion , have fun drawing it next turn and setting it up again.

Maze Rusher is pretty awful.

Riot Gear . Razortip Whip , flame caster wheel are all contenders.

Akroan Horse is pretty terrible too, but Search the City probably beats it.

In fact, my vote goes to search the city. There's a lot of bad cards out, but i think a lot of them get the pass that they're ok for draft, or edh, or have some type of application.

Search the City however, Is just so, sooooo bad.

Trait Doctoring is okay for heroic decks. When all you want is an easy trigger any cipher will do.

January 11, 2014 3:36 p.m.

hungerwolf says... #38

snowstorm Unless anyone blocks. Just because it is the only option for one particular thing doesn't mean it's a good option. Besides,Akroan Crusader is a one-drop red. It's down one power but it doesn't kill you. I'd say that's a good deal right there.

It's not uncommon for green to get out huge creatures early. I've ended games by flashing in a big creature to block. Admittedly, it was only for 5, but still. Firedrinker is nothing but a detriment. Typically, you don't want to burn yourself.

Gidgetimer

I don't see how Search the City is a staple for blue edh decks if I am missing something please explain.

hungerwolf

While firedrinker is not that good of a card it is in no way worse than a lot of cards mention here as it sees tons of play in RDW in standard and has become a staple for the deck type.

January 11, 2014 5:30 p.m.

@Flamecast Wheel it could actually be good it it could target players, and in draft, it is good removal, as it is good for all colors, and it is higher than the 4+ toughness that is the highest easy to get toughness in theros draft

January 11, 2014 8:57 p.m.

sylvannos says... #41

@Gidgetimer: Here's the list of two-drop creatures in Theros. If you're playing mono-black in Limited and need to build up devotion for those Gray Merchant of Asphodel s, Fleshmad Steed is entirely playable. The amount of removal in Theros Limited is rather, well, limited. People aren't going to waste kill spells on your bears. They save them for important threats, like Baleful Eidolon or Keepsake Gorgon .

January 11, 2014 9:19 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #42

@sylvannos I never contended that Fleshmad Steed was the worst card in standard that was someone else. My point was that if someone removes Keepsake Gorgon they also tap down the Fleshmad Steed , so saying it has no drawback is horribly inaccurate. It is no where near a 2 drop Desecration Demon for many many reasons not the least of which is that the creature that dies doesn't have to be an opponent's and doesn't need to be sacrificed specifically to the ability. Opponent sac a creature to Blood Bairn ? Tap the Steed. Opponent removes your fatty? Tap the Steed. Crack a Burnished Hart ? Tap the Steed. Activate Satyr Hedonist ? Tap the steed. There are many ways to have the steed tapped down that would happen in the course of the game. I was only saying its not a bear with no drawback as you stated, it is a bear with a draw back and that is fine.

@Snowstorm I can't tell if you are trolling or if you really didn't understand. I didn't use the sarcasm italics because I felt that it is self evident that Search the City much like Doubling Chant is useless in a singleton format since you will never have "a card with the same name as one of the exiled cards"
