Trading Post reanimator?

Picture this...

Whip of Erebos

Trading Post

Rescue from the Underworld

use Trading Post to make a token, and use it as the secondary cost to Rescue from the Underworld

Now add in some Grisly Salvage , Deadbridge Chant type effects.

Next, put in some Abrupt Decay , Doom Blade for removal

Fill in with other cards. Maybe splash blue for Dimir Charm and early blockers like Omenspeaker .

Could this be the start of reanimator shell for Theros standard?

How about splash white instead so we can Triad of Fates and Ashen Rider ?

Too much mana investment for that though. If it came back with the fate counter I could see that, but you have to spend two turns getting to exile it and returning it to the battlefield.

If there was some way to untap Triad of Fates without having to go 4 color and using Ral Zarek reliably each turn I could see it working maybe.

I think a better way for your combo would be to copy Ashen Rider with things like Clone or Stolen Identity

just use Illusionist's Bracers . plus were running junk now so we have green mana ramp with Elvish Mystic and Sylvan Caryatid

check out Mass Debate All Night Long and Junk ReAnimator LG both are reanimator decks that feature Whip of Erebos and Rescue from the Underworld

just asking, why use the Trading Post at all? rescue from the underworld returns whatever you sacked to the field with what you're returning

I would go to Junk instead of Esper. Sylvan Caryatid is a hard to remove roadblock and gives you Mana. Obzedat's Aid needs less requirements as Rescue from the Underworld and could also revive a Planeswalker. Maybe play both, to protect the deckplan against Slaugther Games?

Run about 7 or 6 fatties to reanimate, maybe 3 Angel of Serenity , 2 Ashen Rider and 1 Worldspine Wurm .

The Strategy comes with a lot of Weaknesses though, one would be Control, since a single counterspell ruins everything. Also, Grisly Salvage could throw away your Trading Post or your reanimate Spell. There is no good replacement for Unburial Rites, lets face it, Reanimator is even more dead than Grixis Control.

As much as I hate to say it, you really have to make reanimation the secondary function of the deck, and provide ways to protect yourself in the meantime. Such as Reaper of the Wilds or Lotleth Troll early game, and Desecration Demon late game. Probably less of the Whip and more focus on Obz Aid and Rescue, otherwise your targets like AOS aren't really performing their function, same with Ashen Rider , he has to die for his second removal aspect to work

@TexasDice Worldspine Wurm wouldn't be a viable reanimation target 9/10 because you would need to dump him and reanimate him with his shuffle ability still on the stack.

Oh right, my bad. I confused his text with Wurmcoil Engine , but that thing rotated years ago.

Hmm... There aren't a lot of viable fatties around, indeed.

Yeah, the best you can hope for are like Lord of the Void , Shadowborn Demon , Armada Wurm , Giant Adephage and Obzedat, Ghost Council

but look at the colors and that's what you're stuck with

@CW:

That won't work because you're copying the ability you activated when you use it. You activate the fate counter ability, copy it, and then do what? If you put it on Ashen Rider he stills gets exiled with two fate counters and comes back with none.

@ShadowLand

Trading Post is a secondary engine to help cycle through the deck. If you Grisly Salvage a Whip of Erebos , you can use it to bring it back for reanimation purposes. It can also discard a fatty to be reanimated and grant you a precious 4 life to help you vs aggro decks. The 3rd bonus is Rescue from the Underworld requires a creature to sac and if you don't have one it's a dead card. Trading Post allows you to create a token that can be sac'd for its extra cost so you can reanimate something from your graveyard.

I just wish there was an "artifact creature" worthy of reanimating like Wurmcoil Engine was back in the day

The reason i was thinking esper was for the "fate seal" effect of Dimir Charm or the "self mill" option to yourself. It is never a dead card and can even be used as removal vs RDW on their x / < 3 creatures. Not to mention esper gives you Supreme Verdict and Detention Sphere in the sideboard. You could use Codex Shredder as the graveyard enabler instead of Grisly Salvage

@ShadowLand: Well, we are speaking about reanimator, so offcolor fatties are fine, we wouldn't hardcast them anyway.

CW says... #13

@harrydemon117 I didn't mean it like that, you can use it to put a fate counter on things you want to keep safe, cards that use ETB effects, cards your willing to sacrifice for draw, or creatures you're afraid of, the fates are versatile as hell.

It lets you continue exiling the opponents perms while letting you do other shenanigans, plus if you have two riders down, oh boy.

Borborygmos Enraged would be a good fatty then

@TexasDice:

I don't know about off color creatures. If they are in your hand without something to dump them to the graveyard then they are a dead card. I learned this the hard way running junk rites with a Gisela, Blade of Goldnight :)

Just out of curiosity, would this work?

T3-4: Drop an Erebos's Emissary T4-5: Use his ability to drop Worldspine Wurm into the graveyard right as your upkeep starts. While the wurm's shuffle ability is on the stack, cast Rescue from the Underworld , targeting the Worldspine Wurm . Since it's the beginning of your upkeep would Rescue from the Underworld resolve and reanimate the wurm?

Sorry if there is an obvious reason this wouldn't work. Just figured I'd ask.

Mythimine says... #17

That would work because it is at instant speed. The triggered ability of Worldspine Wurm hitting the graveyard would go on the stack and as long as you have the creature to sac, Rescue from the Underworld would resolve, reanimating the wurm.
