ways around terminus

Standard forum

Im not sure if this goes here or in deck help but I wanted to know if there was a way that I could save one of my creatures from terminus. If this thread does not go here I apologize.

Effects that exile a creature until end of turn (ala AEtherling ) would do it. Countering it works (obviously), but in addition if they miracle the Terminus you can respond to the miracle trigger and either hit them with Silence or Aurelia's Fury to prevent them from casting it that turn. A temporary solution but an interesting one nonetheless.

You could also bounce your creature to your hand.

If you're anticipating the Terminus , you could also use something like Fiend Hunter to remove it from the field so that when the Terminus hits, you get the creature you want back.

is there a white or black card that could do that? Thats what colors i am running right now.

Both Banisher Priest or Fiend Hunter (as Nigrescence mentioned) would suit that purpose. A bit obvious though. Technically Sudden Disappearance would work but it's not very practical.

off the top of my head ... Flickerform , Legion's Initiative , Mistmeadow Witch

... and then tutors can also help a lot with it.

(I play EDH, though - so I can't guarantee that all of these would be legal in any other format).

Cloudshift doesn't work. The target would re-enter the battlefield before Terminus resolves (assuming you play it in response, but I can't think of it working in any other situation either).

Banisher Priest would not suit the purpose as it can only exile creatures an opponent controls. Fiend Hunter would work, though obviously that can't easily be done in response to a miracled Terminus .

If you're looking for things that you can do in response to a miracled Terminus , there's really only bounce effects. Blinks like Cloudshift and Restoration Angel don't work because the creature re-enters the battlefield before the Terminus resolves.

Orzhov Charm would work in your colors.

Unsummon , Capsize , reanimator tricks (sacrifice it then get it later from your graveyard)

cheat it out using Soul Foundry or Mimic Vat

July 25, 2013 2:18 p.m.

Oops you're totally right, Barandis, my bad. Justme said they wanted to save their creatures from their own Terminus , I just broached the idea of miracle triggers because I didn't know what they were looking for.

Any creature or sorcery that would help can be used in response so long as you have Alchemist's Refuge in play. That way a Fiend Hunter or Sudden Disappearance would be able to save your creatures.

Except that Alchemist's Refuge would require playing two colors that OP is not playing, plus it would require 7 mana (including the virtual mana required since you have to tap the refuge) available during the draw step. Technically possible but not very likely.

That being said, if this isn't standard, Winding Canyons at least eliminates the color need.

It's better than what some people are suggesting, since they aren't even going with Standard on some despite this being the Standard forum. There's almost nothing in Standard that can even react to a Terminus properly, so trying to be within OP's colors is pointless.

meecht says... #21

There are plenty of instant bounce effects in standard to properly respond to a Terminus , but most are not in White or Black.

I reiterate my suggestion of Orzhov Charm .

I was just responding to the original question as it was phrased - it is a question I have been asking myself lately and thinking about. You never know what colors a person might splash if it isn't EDH - but, yes, I will repeat my caveat from before - I am not limiting myself to standard in my own line of thinking - assuming that only standard answers are relevant is probably safe (but the original poster did seem unsure about where he was posting this - and I only responded because it was on the tip of my mind). I thought putting a warning about my ideas not being standard might be the next closest thing to "safe" after just ignoring this question because it was in the standard section - which might be "safer".

I think a Cloudshift in response to a terminus, even on your creature would work. You put the return to battlefield trigger on the stack and let Terminus resolve first

July 26, 2013 2:12 a.m.

There is not trigger with Cloudshift , just the resolution of the spell, which will result in the creature being exiled and then returning to the battlefield.

July 26, 2013 2:25 a.m.

Barandis says... #26

Yeah, to explain away the confusion, there are not two triggers for Cloudshift . There's one that does both parts, taking it away and bringing it back. Both effects happen atomically, without time for anything else in between. There's no way to Cloudshift anything in response to a Terminus , whether miracled or not.

Use Legion's Initiative then use Terminus it will be a one sided field wipe that is epic enough to have traveling bards to sing tales of

uuummm, I know you said Black/White, but in Red/White you have Legion's Initiative you could splash.

If you have a reanimate spell, you could use a sac outlet like Bloodthrone Vampire and sac all your creatures. However, if you are talking about wraths in general, then a mass bounce spell (Devastation Tide ) would do nicely.
