What are the best cards coming out of HOU?

Standard forum

Going to the prerelease tomorrow, obviously did a lot of homework on it. But I want to get everyone's idea of what they think the best cards will be during the prerelease and what will be mainstays in standard after it is all said and done. I feel like the new Grixis Gods are going to be cornerstones and I also think Samut, the Tested will be something that sees a lot of play. Let me hear your thoughts!

EVERYTHING RED OR GREEN!
RED AND GREEN, EVEN BETTER!

CRUSH THEM!

With Hour of Glory and Declaration in Stone in Standard I think you'll find that the gods will be played early on, but then people will Side against them and they will be a waste of a card slot.

There are also quite a lot of cards that now let you Exile things in the Graveyard, which can also shut down the new gods. The fact that one of these is a land, Scavenger Grounds, means that every colour has access to that, and only Disallow can Counter it.

That is, unless you are playing a Control deck.

In Limited, as usual, gods and Planeswalkers will be very strong.

At prerelease Eternalise will be a strong mechanic. Anything that gives you two Creatures for one card is good.

I think Afflict will also be excellent.

To me it doesn't so much come down to which CARDS are good at prerelease, but which MECHANICS will be useful.

Argy you bring up an excellent point. I'm really excited to see what everyone brews up tomorrow and what I'm able to brew up. It'll be interesting to see who gets the most synergy out of their deck. I'll be in Greece for this prerelease and the language barrier will be fun to break through as well. I really hope to get Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh to run Grixis with afflict. That's my dream deck

If youre talking strictly prerelease; I'd say don't plan your strategies around the rares and mythics. You're guaranteed 7 rares/mythics (more so if you pull pack foils), but that doesn't mean they're auto-amazing or even all the same colors/mechanics

Creatures with evasion are always good. Dauntless Aven and Aven of Enduring Hope are solid. Ominous Sphinx is good regardless of how much cycling you're doing. Overcome will win games. (Looks like we're missing some cards in the database)

As Argy mentioned: Eternalize will be powerful in limited. Proven Combatant is a fantastic turn 1 play that comes back again later.

You always want removal at prerelease, hopefully ~8 pieces if you're lucky. Amonkhet in general doesn't have much to choose from compared to other blocks imo. Take what you can get. Sandblast gets rid of a lot of creatures. Desert's Hold is really good since there isn't much enchantment removal. Unsummon is an incredible tempo play. Red has some burn, black has some -1/-1 shenanigans, and there's some great multicolor aftermath cards with removal

I don't play standard - I'm more of an edh guy - but I'm stoked to attend 2/5 prereleases this weekend! Good luck everyone!!!

I don't think Samut, the Tested will be that big in standard. Arlinn Kord is already in standard and isn't used all that much, and is arguably better. I think the Mardu sweepers (Hour of Revelation, Hour of Devastation, Bontu's Last Reckoning) will see a fair amount of play, even if they end up being mainly sideboard cards.

Argy Don't forget Nimble Obstructionist can counter that activated ability of that land...Nimble Obstructionist will definitely see play in U/W Flyer/Flash Control/Tempo (Whatever it will be called) coinciding with Spell Queller.

I stand by what I said.

If you are playing the gods you will run up against a lot of Exile.

Playing will help, but that's true for just about every deck.

Lol Argy I tell myself will help literally every time I run into deckbuilding problems...it usually does. Although it does lead to my having an inordinate amount of U and R decks, because everyone knows is the most fun color to build and I only play U to give R a good challenge.

That's my prerelease advice, btw: run . And I'm only 75% joking, too.
