What happened to Izzet Staticaster?

Standard forum

I remember when rtr was just coming out and whenever somebody played an Izzet Staticaster , their opponent just groaned. When i play a staticaster, people look at me as though i am crazy! First question, why isn't Izzet Staticaster as feared as it should be? Second question, am I really that crazy?

Because it no longer effects the netdecks. Previously, there were a lot of 1 and 2 toughness powerhouses, but now, there aren't.

@GoldGhost012, why in the world would they look at you weirdly when you play Sedge Scorpion . I could talk hours about how that card is so much better than Wasteland Viper ! sadly though, the staticaster does kills Sedge Scorpion , and that is a major problem.

Izzet Staticaster was discussed back when cards like Lingering Souls were still in Standard. Back then, some top-tier decks depended on 1/1 tokens, and Izzet Staticaster was basically a board wipe against those decks. Now, those decks don't exist in Standard anymore.

I guess people just don't realize the power of Sedge Scorpion . Or they're in denial.

I'm a bit surprised too that Izzet Staticaster doesn't see too much play. He hoses MUD's tokens, a pumped Frostburn Weird , Cloudfin Raptor , a singleton Pack Rat , and Sedge Scorpion ! Anything that can hose Sedge Scorpion should be playable, just look at Golgari Charm !

I know bits and pieces of what goes on in Standard. If I had more time, I'd probably follow Standard and Modern more seriously.

It's still an excellent card in a vacuum, it just has a lot to do with what's being played right now. Last season Izzet Staticaster was machine gunning down Lingering Souls , little aggressive humans and pretty much everything in the Aristocrats deck.

Now days the most popular run cards are Nightveil Specter , Jace, Architect of Thought , Desecration Demon , etc. It just doesn't interact well with the current environment.

Yes in agreement with Slycne they don't currently have a way to increase their potency to be effective against any real standard threat except against elspeth tokens and harpy if it were a thing and young pyromancer. Not enough threats there to warrant space in the few, the proud, the sideboard. If something returns to standard that gives deathtouch to other creatures like Onyx Mage for Grixis or Nightshade Peddler for R/U/G than yea he will see play again. Of course peddler wasnt core so doubtful he will see a reprint for a longtime like in an Avacyn revisted or reborn set.

Sedge Scorpion is the green version of Storm Crow but of course Storm Crow is still strictly better.

With the new Wb aggro decks, there are still plenty of 1-toughness creatures (Daring Skyjek , Imposing Sovereign , Dryad Militant , etc.) These are enough to make Staticaster a good sideboard card in any UR deck. However, the reason it's not seeing any play is that there aren't any good UR decks. It's a decent card that simply lacks a home.
