What's the deal with Eidolon of Great Revels?

I don't want to sound stupid, but it feels like I'm missing something.
I mean, I've only seen decklists where the biggest CMC is 3, so basically everything you play backfires immediately.

lol it's pretty insane in modern. where almost every deck functions on spells lower than 3 CMC.

The premise is just that it allows you to kill the opponent before they kill you. If you Lightning Bolt them you take 2 but they take 3. Keep going like that and you'll win pretty quickly - but only just.

It's pretty insane in Legacy, too. It only took the people some time to realize...

I thought the same thing until I played against him. Staring at 2 across from you is very unsettling. You essentially have to take 2 damage to get rid of 1. Then I played with him and lordy did it make me a believer.

Best red creature since Goblin Guide . Get your playset now before they spike up. I play it in all my red decks in all formats. Its at its weakest(but still great) in standard.

I use them. As stated, usually punishes opponent more than it does you. Just don't drop it when you're significantly behind and you'll be ok. Also, it's a 2/2 for 2, so pretty efficient attacker if you're so bold. Satyr Firedancer even clears the way for you. Great card.

Yeah this guy is hands down my favorite red creature in standard. If he goes unchecked, eventually damage just gets nuts and out of hand. On top of everything red or burn is already doing.

I got a playset of this guy immediately, and glad I did. Freaking beast. My play testing with him started at a pre-release, every game I played him I won. See his ability does more than just help you aggro out, it plays mind games with your opponent. Is it worth casting a spell to lose life. So I grabbed a playset for FNM, and man the effect he had. Green White Aggro was about the only deck that stood a chance due to Unflinching Courage. (also the guy beat me thanks to drawing all his bloody 4mana wurms, the only non-3-or-less cmc creature in his deck. Probabilities suck).
In standard he shined for me, often derailing control (all those counters, detention spheres and banishing lights) and most decks par monsters buckled to it.
Then there is Modern. This card single-handedly tells storm to piss off. Not to mention aggro burn decks etc... I play it in a Naya variant of Hate Bears with AEther Vile. :3
Then there's Legacy where he does pretty much the same thing.
Seriously, the card is a boss.

Eidolon of the Great Revel is good because it's used in a lot of decks that don't care about their life total. For example, Burn. Burn decks only want to get their opponent's life total to 0 as quickly as possible. If that means they go down to 1 or 2 themselves, so be it. Burn spells are normally dealing at least 2 damage with their spells anyway, so their spells aren't causing more damage than they're dealing. But if the opponent plays any low CMC spells, then it ends up helping.
