What's winning near you?

So, I live in Atltanta. I've been told that we have a CRAZY competitive MTG scene here. Mostly the winning meta is either Ascendency combo decks, whip decks, or REALLY good temur/mardu mid-range decks. All with great pilots. Obviously there are a lot of aggro brew decks popping up, but I was wanting to know what decks are winning at your LGS?

The Doctor says... #2

I play Sidisi Whip and Top 2 every week.

Granted, a lot of people at my LGS run Homebrew's that are just not good, at all.

That's funny! honest;y it's pretty much the same 10 people that rotate around the winner circle at my LGS. (not gonna beep my horn but I'm one of them LOL) I play a midrange mardu deck right now but I have a lot of problems with whip lately. I think I may need to do some re-side-boarding for it.

Most people at my LGS started playing Aggro decks - (Rabblemaster, Ascendancy, etc.) but quickly moved to Midrange to trump the Aggro decks. Now people are bringing control decks to beat the Midrange decks. I'm not a fan of aggro so I'll stick with control but I suspect that people will start bringing aggro decks again. Its pretty interesting.

Luckily, my LGS pretty much rotates the cast of winning decks. The same group of probably 8 players usually end up winning or in top 4, but most players besides myself switch up what decks they play week to week.

Abzan aggro got 2nd last night and my boros heroic deck got 3rd. I beat a jeskai deck in my final match

I win at my LGS. I play u/w control, which I find to be a great deck. it rewards good play in a fashion that I don't think other decks do. for example, I was playing against g/b constellation, and I stabilized at 1 life. patience and good decisions allowed me to play elspeth while countering his relevant spells. he was at over 40 life from a Whip of Erebos before I began my comeback, and it was quite fun to come back from the brink of death.

on a more serious note, the top decks in my meta are sultai control (Gerard fabiano style), u/w control, and abzan aggro

The winner of FNM at my LGS is usually me with Mardu legends, my buddy playing Mono-Blue Devotion, or Jeskai Goodstuff.

Mono Blue devotion...still exists?

This is the reason I made this thread. I find that some areas are either behind or ahead in the trends of what's winning. Let's try to get some locations in here as well.

Yea The Doctor, it's actually pretty solid. Thassa, God of the Sea and Master of Waves are still basically the wincons. It's got Vortex Elemental and Hypnotic Siren at 1, Omenspeaker and Reality Shift at 2, Dictate of Kruphix and Wall of Frost at 3. It does consistently well.

Oh, and I'm in Central NC.

I live in northern san diego county.

Also, as far as mono blue goes, you should consider Triton Shorestalker and Cloudform as ways to be a bit more aggressive

I also play my own version of UW control. I normally place top 8 if not top 4. It's really rewarding to play and I actually think it's much stronger than UB. We're pretty strong against aggro with brimaz, ram, raise the alarm, etc. against control we've got tons of counters and better finishers, and against midrange, well control vs midrange. The only real weakness I've seen is against Temur. But Temur isn't really a popular clan right now (and I don't think it will be until dragons comes out) so I'm pretty confident in it. Other winning decks in my area are token decks and abzan midrange/ Aggro. I play in Arizona

I agree that temur is a weak matchup due to the high impact 3 drops they have. they have Boon Satyr, Savage Knuckleblade, Yasova Dragonclaw and the like that can come into play under Disdainful Stroke, which can be a problem. however, it isn't that popular, and some sideboard slots can make the matchup better. most temur decks at the moment are the ascendency combo deck that is floating around, but I find that matchup to be very easy. the biggest downside I see with u/w is that it is somewhat weak to really fast decks and decks with a lot of disruption to protect an early threat.

I've never really had problems with fast aggro. I just have so much anti aggro in my sideboard that it really isn't that bad. UW heroic is sometimes an annoying matchup but I try to counter their draw card spells and wait for Aethersprouts. It's usually enough to get there. Though they also bring in stubborn denial. Man that card is incredible. Overall it's just a fun and rewarding and strong deck.

UW control and GW midrange are what I see. There are a few UB controls running around. Lots of warrior tribal stuff that never gets anywhere. As for myself, I play UW tempo. Monastery Mentor and Seeker of the Way combined with anthems, draw spells, Monastery Siege and protection spells make it quite resilient.

I guess it is like UW heroic. But without the heroic. I've yet to see a UW heroic around here so I can't tell.

Our modern meta is insane. It's everything from REAL jund decks. R/g tron, pox, and a few twin decks. I run 4 color burn and have only 4-0 once. I usually 3-1. Our usual showing for standard tournaments is around 50-60 people and modern is around 30-40.

February 1, 2015 11:54 a.m.

bretters what store do you play at? I work in Tacoma and have been looking for a new place for Standard tournaments.

Squisherton 50-60 for standard? Holy shit. How do you only do four rounds???

The Doctor: My LGS frequently has 32+ plus players for Standard. I've seen quite a few 5 or 6 round events, which is why I stopped playing there... I don't have 5-6 hours to spend playing magic on a weeknight, lol.

I live in Louisiana. I play Jeskai Tempo(Homebrew). Always go X-1 or better with it. Most people around here were playing Sidisi Whip. Seems to have shifted to these half baked jeskai token and temur decks. What ive seen the most of though... Mardu Warriors. thank god for anger of the gods. We usually get 25-30 people on FNM/SaturdayNightMagic.

Squisherton says... #25

Yeah! I play at supergamesinc! It's one of the biggest mtg stores in the country. And That's FNM. If you go to one of the other tournaments it'll be more according to the Amount of players.

Mardu and abzan as far as I know

I play at Gamers Santuary and we have some home brews, Green or G/R devotion, UB control, Abzan, a couple Jeskai decks as well (there is an occasional Temur deck). I am the oddball still playing red aggro. The winners are normally my deck, G or G/R devotion, and UB control ( Meaning 3-1 3-0-1 and 4-0).
