Whelmimg wave in standard

Or rather why isn't Whelming Wave played. I mean it's cheaper than the other sweepers and for say UB control it keeps Pearl Lake Ancient on the field unopposed. Yeah destroying is always better but it just seems kind of odd to me that it isn't seeing play in control builds

"Yeah destroying is always better" - nail on the head.

Fair enough I figured with half the meta being token strategies it made sense to use something like whelming wave since all the tokens go away regardless.

"half"? Of what meta?

I run one sideboard for Heroic.

It's a strong card, but AEtherspouts does a much better job.

Maybe it's just my LGS but one of te popular decks is RW tokens and Mardu tokens.

Whelming Wave might be the tech for beating the GW devotion deck featuring Mastery of the Unseen, so if that deck continues to be dominant I would run a copy or two in my sideboard.

I still need to get footage of that deck to learn how it runs. I just know it involves some goofiness with mastery of the unseen

@dan8080 the deck is actually really straight foward. Ramp into Whisperwood Elemental and start pooping out dudes every turn. Land a Mastery of the Unseen use that and your ramp to help poop out more dudes. The idea is to overwhelm your opponent with creatures and use the lifegain from flipping creatures face up to make sure your opponent doesn't kill you before you can overwhelm them.

Thanks, I can see how that would work. Looks like Drown in Sorrow is my only friend for that matchup

dan8080 in the mirror, it takes so long. Sam black was at 276 life in a GW Dev mirror

I thought getting yourself above 100 life was considered slow play by judges. That's painfully funny though

Whelming Wave is solid since there are tons of token strategies out there, plus it's good against Heroic, any Green Devotion decks including Mastery, and even just to buy a turn against fast aggro. Not good enough to crack the mainboard in most control decks, though I thoroughly love it in my mono U control.

Whelming Wave is a solid card for control players running Pearl Lake Ancient triggers prowess for that extra damage.

Control players couldn't care less about what health you are on.

Depending on the meta (Jeskai tokens, and Heroic) it's alright, but usually an AEtherspouts is better, because it hits more decks.
