When to use guildgates?

I am seeing a lot of decks in the standard pro tour that are using guild gates in preference to the dual lands that come in tapped if you don't have one of those lands in play.

It makes sense to me with Gatecreeper Vine , but I am clearly missing something. To me, it looks like a defensive move of some kind, but I'm not aware of what it is defending against.

The most recent pro tour? It was block constructed so checklands weren't legal and thus people had to use other methods.

What alpinefroggy said. It's also worth noting that some decks will use all the shock and checklands for their colors, but will need more mana fixing, so they'll use one or two gates.

Ahhh, didn't get that it was block constructed - just went straight to Youtube coverage and let it run. oops. Now it makes more sense.

Thanks!
